Faith Leading to Song
“It is written: ‘They believed in His words; then they sang His praise.’”
The Sefat Emet teaches that the song at the sea emerged specifically from their faith—belief opened the gate to song.
“For through ‘they believed.’”
The act of believing itself became the spiritual force that elevated them.
“They came to the song.”
Faith leads to a higher inner clarity, which naturally expresses itself as song to God.
“They were drawn after the words of the living God and merited to see the inner essence of things.”
By aligning themselves with divine speech, they gained access to the inner spiritual reality beyond external appearances.
“And a reflection of this occurs on Shabbat, which is called ‘testimony.’”
Shabbat also reveals inner truth; it testifies to God’s creation and presence.
“And all who rest on Shabbat believe in the Creator of the world.”
Shabbat observance itself is an act of faith, acknowledging God’s mastery over creation.
“And likewise the three Shabbat meals of faith through which one merits faith on Shabbat.”
The three meals of Shabbat intensify and deepen this faith, each meal serving as a spiritual conduit.
“Therefore on Shabbat it is said: ‘It is good to give thanks to God.’”
Gratitude flows naturally from the faith‑state awakened by Shabbat’s holiness.
“And on it is fulfilled: ‘Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it,’ which is an inheritance without boundaries.”
Shabbat opens channels of boundless spiritual expansion—one simply needs to open oneself to receive.
“And it is a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt.”
The freedom experienced on Shabbat echoes the liberation from Egypt, freeing the soul from constraints.
“And on it the mouths of Israel are opened, and the Holy Spirit [rests upon them] through the extra Shabbat soul.”
With the added Shabbat soul, Israel gains divine inspiration, enabling true expression and spiritual insight.
Summary: Faith leads to song and inner vision, and Shabbat recreates this experience. Through rest, meals of faith, gratitude, and divine expansiveness, the Jewish people receive an added soul that opens them to inspiration and spiritual clarity.
