Shabbos Awakens Inner Desire
In the Midrash: “You open Your hand and satisfy every living being with desire—each according to what he asks.”
The Sefat Emet cites the Midrash, which teaches that God provides not only sustenance, but the specific desire each creature seeks.
Surely the longing of the Children of Israel was directed toward heaven, and therefore they were given bread from heaven.
Because Israel’s yearning was elevated, their sustenance—manna—came from a heavenly source.
And previously it is written: “The eyes of all look to You… You give them… their food.”
This verse emphasizes that God prepares sustenance for all creation.
For the Holy One prepares food for all His creatures.
All beings receive nourishment directly from God’s providence.
But to Israel was given the desire to know what to ask for.
Israel is granted a higher gift: insight into what one ought to desire.
And this desire is the vessel through which they can later receive sustenance according to what is sought.
Desire shapes the capacity to receive; one’s inner yearning forms the spiritual vessel for divine provision.
And this is the blessing of Shabbat, as the Zohar writes that all blessings depend upon it.
Shabbat is the source from which all worldly and spiritual blessings flow.
Meaning: during the weekdays He gives their food in its time.
During the week God provides sustenance in a measured, practical manner.
But on Shabbat the inner gate is opened.
Shabbat reveals a deeper spiritual channel unavailable during the week.
And He grants desire into the souls of Israel, as it is said: “One who delights in Shabbat is granted the desires of his heart.”
On Shabbat God implants elevated desire in the soul, aligning it with divine will.
And this is the root of blessings, for the Holy One satisfies each person according to what he seeks.
Blessing flows from the alignment of divine generosity with the seeker’s inner longing.
Thus it says in Shabbat prayers: “He desired us and granted us His holy Shabbat.”
God’s special favor is expressed in gifting Israel Shabbat, the source of desire and blessing.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that God not only sustains all creation but grants Israel the deeper gift of knowing what to desire. Shabbat opens the inner gate through which this elevated desire flows, forming the vessel for all blessings.
