Hiddenness and Revelation in Exile
Exile · Redemption · Hiddenness · Shechinah · Israel
In the Midrash: “This portion is closed because the eyes and hearts of Israel were closed.”
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that the physical closure of the parashah reflects a spiritual closing in Israel during the start of the exile.
The matter teaches that Israel make a spiritual imprint, and as their eyes and hearts became closed, so the Torah portion became closed.
The Torah mirrors the inner condition of the people; Israel’s constriction creates a parallel constriction in revelation.
This is the meaning of “I will go down with you to Egypt.”
God descends with Israel into concealment; the exile is shared on a divine level.
“I am with him in distress.”
The divine presence remains bound to Israel even in times of suffering.
For the exile of Israel is not only punishment.
Exile has a constructive, ordered role beyond retribution.
Just as the redemptions follow a precise order,
The process of redemption is structured and deliberate.
so too there is an order to the exiles.
Exile itself unfolds according to divine design.
For it is taught: Torah, Israel, and the Holy One are all one.
The unity between these three means changes in Israel affect both Torah and the divine revelation.
And just as the holy Name and Torah have hidden and revealed aspects, so it is with the souls of Israel.
The inner life of Israel contains parallel layers of concealment and revelation.
In the time of the Temple there was revelation above and below.
Both spiritual and earthly realms experienced openness.
But in exile everything is in concealment.
Exile brings universal spiritual contraction.
In these two aspects Israel is praised, as it is said: “Black in exile and lovely in redemption.”
Israel’s dual states—concealed and revealed—both express spiritual beauty.
And it is written: “A locked garden.”
Israel retains purity by remaining closed off from outside influences.
This means that Israel can conceal themselves and avoid mixing among the nations even while living among them.
Their inner identity remains guarded.
As it is written: “Like a rose among thorns,” for in exile the community of Israel is like a closed rose.
Surrounded by harshness, Israel’s essence remains hidden but intact.
And likewise: “Like an apple among forest trees,” which the sages interpret as an apple without shade.
This refers to divine concealment corresponding to Israel’s concealment.
Meaning: when Israel is among thorns in exile, so above, as it were, the Divine is in concealment.
The concealment below produces concealment above.
But Israel knows the secret that there are hidden and revealed states.
This knowledge sustains them.
Therefore they strengthen themselves in faith even at night.
Faith persists even during concealment.
Thus: “In His shade I delighted and sat.”
They cling to God even when He is hidden.
Meaning: they merited afterward to reach revelation, when the eyes of His glory were revealed publicly at redemption.
Endurance through concealment leads to open revelation.
This is “a locked fountain”—the aspect ready for revelation.
The “locked” state holds potential for later openness.
And it is true that “locked garden” and “locked fountain” both refer to the time of concealment.
The repeated term “locked” marks the period of hiddenness.
And these are the aspects of the eyes and the heart of Israel.
The inner faculties experience closure.
For the heart is hidden and is called a garden.
The heart is inward and concealed.
And the eye is a fountain.
The eye expresses outward flow.
And both were closed.
Exile affects both perception and inner feeling.
The eye and heart are essential, as it says: “Do not stray after your heart and your eyes.”
These faculties guide spiritual direction.
Since their main power lies in holiness, they are subject to concealments; therefore it is written “Do not stray.”
Their sanctity requires special guarding.
See the Zohar.
The Zohar elaborates on these ideas of inner faculties and concealment.
And for these two aspects the mitzvah of tefillin was established.
Tefillin sanctify heart and mind.
The hand-tefillin corresponds to the heart.
It rests opposite the heart’s spiritual seat.
And the head-tefillin is placed between the eyes.
This sanctifies perception and thought.
In the collective Israel, Judah and Joseph are like the two tefillin.
They embody the aspects of heart and mind within the nation.
The hand is associated with Judah, as it says: “Your hand on the neck.”
Judah represents action and strength.
“His hands contend for him.”
A verse affirming Judah’s might.
And Joseph corresponds to the head, as it is said: “To the head of Joseph.”
Joseph represents spiritual insight.
“The eye rests upon him.”
Joseph is linked to vision and revelation.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the closure of the parashah reflects Israel’s inner concealment in exile, which parallels concealment in Torah and in the divine presence. Exile and redemption follow ordered patterns of hiddenness and revelation. Israel preserves holiness by remaining a “locked garden,” and tefillin correspond to the heart and eyes—embodied by Judah and Joseph.
