Two Messiahs and Divine Influence

Vayechi · תרמ"ד (1883) · Essay 1

Mashiach ben Yosef · Mashiach ben David · Blessing · Yosef HaTzaddik · Spiritual Roots

“In the verse: ‘Gather yourselves and I will tell you; assemble and listen.’”

The Sefat Emet notes that Scripture uses two different commands—‘gather’ and ‘assemble’—which signal two distinct types of spiritual gatherings.

“These are two kinds of assemblies.”

Each mode of gathering corresponds to a different spiritual orientation and purpose.

“As has already been explained, they allude to Mashiach son of Joseph and Mashiach son of David.”

The two messianic lineages parallel the two modes of gathering—one initiating influence, one completing it.

“There is a gathering that awakens the heavenly influence descending from above, and this is the aspect of Joseph: ‘Gather yourselves and I will tell you.’”

Joseph represents the drawing down of divine flow from above into the world.

“The completion and final stage is the aspect of the son of David: ‘Assemble and listen,’ which is the receptive power.”

David symbolizes receiving, grounding, and manifesting the flow drawn down by Joseph.

“As it is written: ‘Mighty in strength, performers of His word, to listen.’”

The verse shows that action awakens divine speech, and afterward one becomes able to listen to it.

“For Israel awakens the divine speech, and afterward they are prepared to listen to it, as stated in the Zohar, section Balak.”

The human initiative of awakening draws forth the divine response.

“And these two dynamics remain within Israel forever, as is said daily.”

The dual motion—awakening and receiving—is perpetual within Israel.

“‘I command you today.’”

This constant renewal of divine command reflects the eternal dual structure.

“And for this reason the Shema was instituted; thus there is always a voice descending from heaven to Israel.”

The Shema embodies the perpetual reception of divine voice.

“And the aspect of prayer is the service of the heart.”

Prayer represents the inner receptive dimension aligned with ‘assemble and listen.’

“This is the meaning of ‘assemble and listen.’”

Listening is the heart’s labor in prayer.

“All of this certainly exists within Israel as a whole; they merely need to exert themselves to bring these powers from potential to actuality.”

The spiritual structures are inherent but require intentional activation.

“For the Patriarchs and the Tribes placed roots within the hearts of Israel, for none of their deeds were incidental—they are the pillars of the world.”

Israel’s spiritual capacity is inherited from the foundational actions of the ancestors.

“As it is written: ‘All these…’ and ‘This is what he spoke…’”

The Torah hints that each tribe was set in its proper place through Jacob’s words.

“He established each one in its place and bound them to the supernal root.”

Jacob aligned each tribe with its divine source.

“‘And he blessed them’—this is the supernal addition beyond nature.”

Blessing signifies an infusion of transcendent, non-natural energy.

“In truth, the essence of the blessing is mentioned only regarding Joseph, for he is the vessel that holds blessing and peace.”

Joseph uniquely channels and contains divine abundance.

“And the phrase ‘he blessed them’ hints that their letter is the tzaddik.”

The righteous person is the conduit of blessing for all tribes.

“And there is an allusion to twelve blessings in Joseph.”

Joseph receives blessing on behalf of all twelve tribes.

“Five times the word ‘blessings.’”

These references hint to the structure of the blessings.

“Two interpretations—making ten.”

A hermeneutic reading yields ten blessings.

“‘And He shall bless you’—eleven.”

This raises the count to eleven.

“And it is written: ‘And he blessed Joseph’—this makes twelve.”

The final blessing completes the set.

“For he received twelve blessings on behalf of them all.”

Joseph channels blessing to the entire collective.

“As it is written: ‘The blessings of your father prevailed… let them be upon the head of Joseph,’ for he receives from Jacob and bestows to the tribes.”

Joseph stands between Jacob and the tribes, transmitting Jacob’s blessing outward.

“It says ‘the blessings of your father,’ though it should have said ‘my blessing,’ as the verse concludes with ‘my progenitors.’”

The unusual phrasing signals a deeper message.

“This hints that through Joseph the righteous, the blessings of your father are elevated.”

Joseph amplifies and raises Jacob’s blessings.

“As it is said: he is a flame, for fire without a flame does not extend far.”

Joseph is the radiant extension of the patriarchal fire.

“As it is written: ‘Love is strong as death’—the aspect of Abraham.”

Abraham embodies boundless love.

“‘Harsh…’—the aspect of Isaac.”

Isaac represents awe and severity.

“‘Flashes of fire’—the aspect of Jacob.”

Jacob synthesizes the spiritual energies of his fathers.

“‘The flame’—the aspect of Joseph.”

Joseph is the outward radiance and extension of the patriarchal fire.

“And all these roots remain within Israel; therefore ‘many waters cannot extinguish the love,’ as above.”

The ancestral spiritual foundations ensure that divine love persists within Israel eternally.

The Sefat Emet explains that Jacob’s call to ‘gather’ and ‘assemble’ encodes two spiritual dynamics—awakening divine flow (Joseph) and receiving it (David). These patterns are eternal in Israel, rooted in the Patriarchs and the tribes. Joseph uniquely channels and magnifies blessing for all, serving as the flame that extends the fire of the ancestors. Because these roots endure within Israel, divine love can never be extinguished.
