בפסוק יהודה אתה יודוך אחיך כו'.
“In the verse: ‘Judah, you—your brothers shall praise you,’ etc.”
The Sefat Emet opens by noting that Judah is given a unique form of praise by his brothers, indicating his essential leadership.
כי יהודה הכין הדרך לכל בנ"י ונק' יהודים על שמו.
For Judah prepared the path for all the Children of Israel, and they are called ‘Jews’ after him.
Judah establishes the spiritual model for Israel, and the national name “Yehudim” derives from him.
וזה כח הודאה מודה על האמת.
And this is the power of acknowledgment—admitting the truth.
Judah’s essence is the capacity to recognize and confess truth.
ובזה יכולין להתדבק באמת והיא בחי' אמונה.
Through this one can cleave to truth, which is the aspect of faith.
Acknowledgment creates attachment to divine truth, manifest as faith.
כרע רבץ כארי כו' לומר אפי' בשעת ירידה יש לו התחזקות והתאמצות.
“He crouched, lay down like a lion,” etc.—to say that even in moments of descent he retains strength and resolve.
Judah’s lion-like nature means he is firm even in spiritual downturns.
וזה החילוק בין יוסף ויהודה דכ' ובידך לגדל ולחזק לכל.
And this is the difference between Joseph and Judah, for it is written: “In Your hand is power to make great and to strengthen all.”
Their roles differ: Joseph is uplifted; Judah receives inner strengthening.
יש נושעים ע"י התנשאות ויש ע"י התחזקות.
There are those saved through exaltation, and those through strengthening.
Spiritual salvation can come by elevation or by fortitude.
ויוסף נתעלה במדריגה גבוה.
And Joseph was elevated to a high level.
Joseph embodies spiritual ascent.
ויהודה ניתן לו החיזוק כמו שהוא והוא גברא דמרי' סייעי'.
But Judah was given strength as he is, for he is a man whom the Master assists.
Judah’s power is divine reinforcement amid human limitation.
ולכן כל השם בו עם אות ד'. לומר אשכון את דכא לפי דלית לי' מגרמי' כלום.
Therefore, whoever bears the letter dalet within him indicates: “I dwell with the crushed,” for he has nothing of his own.
The dalet signifies humility and self-nullification.
והי' בו בחי' הביטול לגמרי אל הקב"ה.
And he possessed complete self-nullification before the Holy One.
Judah nullifies himself entirely to God.
ועבד מלך מלך.
And the servant of a king is as a king.
Through submission, Judah attains royalty.
והנה הקב"ה משפיל גאים ומגביה שפלים.
And behold, God lowers the proud and raises the lowly.
This divine pattern underlies Judah’s rise.
ואין הפי' על מי שהוא בעל גיאה בשקר.
And this does not refer to one who is proud falsely.
The verse speaks of genuine spiritual dynamics, not superficial arrogance.
אך המידה היא כך כי לפי התרוממות הגאים. כך יש בהם בחי' השפלה.
Rather, this is the measure: in proportion to the exaltation of the proud is their fall.
Exaltation and abasement correspond in measure.
והכל עדות על הבורא ית"ש כי לו המלוכה.
And all is testimony to the Creator, for the kingship is His.
The rise and fall of beings point to divine sovereignty.
ולכן אפי' בשרים שלמעלה כך היא המדה.
Therefore even for the heavenly princes this is the measure.
Celestial beings, too, follow this dynamic.
והרי העליונים הם קדושים וכל הנהגת העולם השפל נעשה על ידיהם.
And the supernal beings are holy, and the governance of the lower world is done through them.
Even holy intermediaries operate through this balance.
ובנ"י התחתונים הם שפלים וכל העולמות מתנהגין ע"פ מעשה התחתונים.
And Israel below are lowly, yet all the worlds are conducted according to their deeds.
Israel’s actions influence all realms despite their earthly position.
וז"ש כי גאה גאה.
Thus it says: “For He is exalted above the exalted.”
Only God possesses absolute exaltation.
לאפוקי שאין שום גיאות שלא יהי' בו שפלות כי לפי התרוממות השרים כך היא שפלתם.
This excludes all other exaltation, for none is without lowliness; the higher the princes rise, the greater their fall.
Created beings have built-in limits; only God transcends them.
בלתי הבורא ית' כי גאה גאה.
Except the Creator, for He is exalted above exaltation.
God alone is purely exalted.
וכן מה שדרשו חז"ל גאות אדם תשפילנו על אדה"ר ויוסף הצדיק.
So too the Sages interpreted “Man’s pride shall bring him low” regarding Adam and Joseph the righteous.
Their elevation was proportionate to their eventual fall.
ע"ש זה הכוונה שלפי הגיאות והתרוממות שניתן להם לכן נשפלו כי כך היא המדה.
This means: according to the exaltation given them, so was their fall, for such is the measure.
Spiritual arithmetic governs rise and descent.
ויהודה הוא שפל וגבוה.
And Judah is both lowly and exalted.
His humility becomes the root of his greatness.
ויוסף הוא בחי' זקיפה כמ"ש קמה אלומתי וגם נצבה.
And Joseph is the aspect of uprightness, as it is written: “My sheaf rose and also stood upright.”
Joseph’s nature is vertical elevation.
ויהודה הכריעה כמ"ש כרע שכב.
And Judah bends low, as it says: “He crouched, he lay down.”
Judah’s stance is submission.
ואעפ"כ הוא כארי וכלביא.
Yet even so, he is like a lion and a lioness.
His humility does not diminish his strength.
זה גבורת הבורא ית' וידו החזקה ששלח נשמות בנ"י למטה ויש להם כמה מיני שפלות ומחלוקות ומסטינים מלבר ומלגאו.
This is the might of the Creator, who sent the souls of Israel below, and they face many forms of lowliness, conflict, and opposition from without and within.
Israel’s struggles manifest divine intent.
והקב"ה מחזיק אותם.
And God sustains them.
Their endurance is divinely supported.
משל לגבור שהעמיד את הקורה ומורה בה חצים. החצים כלים. והקורה עומדת.
A parable: a mighty man sets up a beam and shoots arrows at it; the arrows are spent, but the beam stands.
Israel remains firm despite continual assaults.
כמ"ש במדרש נצבים.
As stated in the Midrash on Nitzavim.
The Midrash highlights Israel’s enduring stance.
וזה כח מלכותו ית"ש דכ' מלכותך מלכות כל עולמים.
And this is the power of His kingship, as it says: “Your kingship is kingship over all worlds.”
Divine kingship prevails across hidden realms.
בתוך כל העלמות והסתרות אעפ"כ לו המלוכה.
Within all concealments and hiddenness, still the kingship is His.
God’s sovereignty persists even when obscured.
וזה ניתן ליהודה ודוד.
And this was given to Judah and to David.
They inherit enduring kingship.
ואיתא בפסוק וישתחו ישראל על ראש המטה.
And it is written: “And Israel bowed upon the head of the bed.”
This hints to subservience before divine kingship.
וכן בפסוק ויפלו לפניו כו' הננו לך לעבדים אמרו תעלא בעידני' סגיד לי'.
And likewise: “They fell before him… we are your servants.” They said: “When the fox is in his season, bow to him.”
Even lesser rulers receive homage in their moment.
והענין הוא כי המלוכה ניתן ליהודה בקביעות כמו ארי מלך בחיות.
The matter is that kingship is given to Judah permanently, like the lion who is king among beasts.
Judah’s rule is stable and enduring.
ומ"מ השועל שהוא פקח בחכמתו מייעץ גם להארי באיזה זמנים ואז גם הארי משתחוה לו.
Yet the fox, wise in cunning, advises even the lion at certain times, and then the lion bows to him.
There are moments when another receives temporary ascendancy.
וכן הוא יהודה מלך.
Thus Judah is king.
He holds the intrinsic royal role.
ויוסף שהוא באמת עלי עין ויש זמנים שמתגלה הארת יוסף ואז הכל משתחוים לו.
And Joseph, who is truly above the eye, has times when his illumination is revealed and then all bow to him.
Joseph’s splendor appears in special moments.
כי ביהודה כ' לא יסור שבט.
For regarding Judah it is written: “The scepter shall not depart.”
Judah’s monarchy persists.
וכ' וזאת ליהודה.
And it says: “And this is for Judah.”
“This” implies permanence.
זאת הוא דבר המתקיים תמיד.
“This” means something that endures forever.
The term marks unchanging continuity.
כי אין עולם מתקיים בלי מלך.
For the world cannot endure without a king.
Royal stability sustains creation.
אבל יוסף ע"ש התוספות שבא מעולם העליון.
But Joseph, named for increase, comes from the higher world.
His influence is supernal surplus.
וזה לא יוכל להיות תמיד רק בשבתות ויו"ט שמתגלה הארה הנ"ל.
And this cannot be always, but only on Sabbaths and festivals when this illumination is revealed.
Joseph’s radiance appears in sacred times.
ואז מתחברין.
And then they unite.
Judah and Joseph harmonize during holy days.
ויגש אליו יהודה.
“And Judah approached him.”
This symbolizes their union.

The Midrash explains this convergence.
Summary: Judah embodies humility, strength, and enduring kingship; Joseph embodies exaltation and transcendent illumination. Their dynamic interplay reveals divine sovereignty manifested through both stability and episodic radiance.
