בענין ברכת השבטים שבירך יעקב עיקר הברכות קיבלו יהודה ויוסף.

“Regarding the blessings of the tribes that Jacob bestowed, the main blessings were received by Judah and Joseph.”

The Sefat Emet begins by noting that among all the tribes, Judah and Joseph received the central spiritual blessings, indicating their unique roles within Israel.

ומו"ז ז"ל אמר כי ברכת יוסף הוא ברכת השבת נחלה בלי מצרים כמ"ש ברכות אביך גברו כו'.

“And my grandfather, of blessed memory, said that Joseph’s blessing is the blessing of Shabbat — an inheritance without boundaries, as it is written: ‘The blessings of your father prevailed…’”

Joseph’s blessing reflects the limitless spiritual flow of Shabbat, which is not confined by material boundaries.

ובספרים איתא כי ברכת יהודה הוא השבת ע"ש בס' רקנטי ור' בחיי.

“And in the books it is stated that Judah’s blessing is also Shabbat, as written in the Sefer Rikanati and Rabbenu Beḥaye.”

Other commentators associate Judah with a different aspect of Shabbat, showing that both tribes have deep Shabbat connections.

ונראה דשניהם אמת כי יש בשבת זכור ושמור והוא בחי' יוסף ויהודה.

“And it seems that both are true, for Shabbat contains ‘remember’ and ‘guard,’ which correspond to Joseph and Judah.”

The two aspects of Shabbat reflect two spiritual modalities: Joseph aligns with the hidden remembrance, while Judah embodies the outward guarding.

והם בחי' סתים וגליא ברית המעור וברית הלשון.

“And these are the aspects of hidden and revealed — the covenant of the body and the covenant of the tongue.”

Joseph corresponds to concealed holiness, Judah to revealed sanctification through speech.

כי שבת סהדותא איקרי.

“For Shabbat is called testimony.”

Shabbat testifies to divine creation and presence.

והפה הוא בחי' התגלות שהפה נברא להודות לה'.

“And the mouth is the aspect of revelation, for it was created to give thanks to God.”

Judah’s strength through speech exemplifies revealed sanctity.

וזכור הוא באתכסיא.

“‘Remember’ is in concealment.”

The inner act of remembering aligns with Joseph’s hidden holiness.

ולכן לא הכירו השבטים כוחו של יוסף.

“Therefore the tribes did not recognize Joseph’s power.”

His holiness was veiled, making it difficult for others to perceive.

ויהודה כ' בי' אתה יודוך אחיך כי הארה שלו בהתגלות.

“But of Judah it is written: ‘Your brothers will praise you,’ for his illumination is revealed.”

Judah’s spiritual influence is openly visible.

ואיתא יוסף קידש ש"ש בסתר ניתוסף לו ה' משמו של הקב"ה.

“It is taught that Joseph sanctified the Divine Name in secret, and a letter ה was added to his name from the Name of God.”

Joseph receives hidden divine empowerment.

ויהודה קידש ש"ש בפרהסיא נקרא כולו ע"ש של הקב"ה.

“And Judah sanctified the Divine Name publicly, and his entire name is called by the Name of God.”

Judah’s sanctification shines openly and fully.

והגם כי בחי' יוסף למעלה מיהודה.

“And although Joseph’s level is higher than Judah’s…”

Joseph’s concealed holiness originates from a more elevated realm.

אות ה' שניתוסף לו היא מן השם הוי' הנעלה שבו משתתף יוסף עם הג' אבות.

“The letter ה added to him is from the exalted Name Havaya, through which Joseph joins with the three Patriarchs.”

Joseph participates in the foundational divine structure of Israel.

ואות ה' ניתן ליוסף שבזה מאיר לשם הוי' שביהודה.

“And the letter ה given to Joseph illuminates the Name Havaya within Judah.”

The hidden light of Joseph empowers Judah’s revealed holiness.

ולכן איתא בזוה"ק כי בשבת לא אשתכח בי' מנא משום דכולהו ברכאין בי' תליין דייקא.

“Therefore the Zohar states that on Shabbat no vessel is found in it, for all blessings depend precisely on it.”

Shabbat is the spiritual root where all blessings reside in potential.

וא"י להיות בגלוי רק בשורש הנסתר ולא באתגליא.

“And it cannot be in revelation, only in the hidden root, not in the revealed.”

Shabbat’s essence is concealed, not manifest.

וכתיב בשבת ביני ובין בנ"י אות היא.

“And it is written regarding Shabbat: ‘Between Me and the Children of Israel it is a sign.’”

The covenantal nature of Shabbat binds God and Israel intimately.

א"כ השבת יש בו חלק להקב"ה וחלק לבנ"י.

“Thus Shabbat has a portion belonging to God and a portion belonging to Israel.”

This duality mirrors hidden and revealed aspects.

וב' אלו הם ב' בחי' הנ"ל. זכור ושמור. יוסף ויהודה.

“And these two are the aforementioned aspects: remember and guard; Joseph and Judah.”

The structure of Shabbat reflects these paired spiritual modes.

וזה בחי' משנה לחם שכ' בזוה"ק ע"ש לחם מן הארץ ולחם מן השמים.

“And this is the aspect of the double bread, as written in the Zohar — bread from the earth and bread from heaven.”

The two breads represent earthly revelation and heavenly concealment.

ובחי' יהודה לחם מן הארץ והוא הלחם שזוכין ע"י בירור בימי המעשה.

“Judah’s aspect is the bread from the earth, the bread attained through refinement during the weekdays.”

Judah represents the human labor of elevating the mundane.

ובנ"י בכח גלות מצרים הרויחו זה הלחם כמ"ש לחם עוני שבא ע"י עינוי.

“And Israel, through the power of the Egyptian exile, acquired this bread, as it is written: ‘Bread of affliction,’ which comes through affliction.”

Earthly holiness is forged through struggle.

ושבת נק' מנוחה שבשבת זוכין ללחם זה שלא ע"י עינוי ובירור.

“And Shabbat is called rest, for on Shabbat one merits this bread without affliction or refinement.”

Shabbat grants the same spiritual nourishment effortlessly.

דאין בו פסולת.

“For it contains no waste.”

Shabbat’s sustenance is wholly pure.

ואח"כ בקבלת התורה זכו בנ"י ללחם מן השמים התורה.

“And afterward, at the giving of the Torah, Israel merited the bread from heaven — the Torah.”

The heavenly bread symbolizes the divine wisdom of Torah.

ושבת זכר ליצי"מ ולקבלת התורה לכן יש בו לחם משנה.

“And Shabbat is a remembrance of the Exodus and the giving of the Torah; therefore it contains double bread.”

Shabbat unites earthly and heavenly nourishment, reflecting Joseph and Judah together.

The Sefat Emet teaches that Judah and Joseph embody revealed and hidden sanctity, expressed in Shabbat through ‘guard’ and ‘remember,’ bread from earth and bread from heaven, forming a unified spiritual wholeness.
