בפסוק האספו ואגידה כו' ושמעו.

“In the verse: ‘Gather yourselves and I will tell you… and listen.’”

The Sefat Emet opens by examining Jacob’s command to gather and listen.

ואחז"ל ביקש לגלות הקץ ונסתם ממנו כו'.

“And our sages said: He sought to reveal the end, but it was concealed from him.”

Jacob intended to disclose the final redemption, yet Heaven withheld it.

כבר כתבנו במ"א כי האספו והקבצו הם ב' מיני כינוסים.

“We have written elsewhere that ‘gather yourselves’ and ‘assemble’ are two types of gatherings.”

The terms denote two distinct spiritual modes of coming together.

האספו הוא בכלות הנפש כמ"ש רוחו כו' אליו יאסוף.

“‘Gather yourselves’ refers to the soul’s completion, as in: ‘His spirit… He gathers to Himself.’”

This gathering is an inward movement toward spiritual wholeness.

והוא כמו הקדמת נעשה לנשמע שהי' בקבלת התורה כמ"ש חז"ל בפי' עושי דברו כדי לשמוע בק"ד.

“And it is like the precedence of ‘We will do’ to ‘We will hear’ at Sinai, as the sages taught regarding ‘those who do His word’—they act in order to hear the divine voice.”

This inward gathering resembles Israel’s supra-rational commitment at Sinai.

וז"ש האספו ואגידה בחי' עושי דברו שבנ"י עושים הדיבור.

“Thus ‘Gather yourselves and I will tell you’ refers to the aspect of ‘those who do His word,’ for Israel causes the divine speech to be spoken.”

Their unity draws forth revelation itself.

כמ"ש חז"ל בפסוק שמעה עמי ואדברה אין מעידין אלא בשומע לכן הקדים שמעה אז ואדברה.

“As the sages taught on the verse: ‘Hear, My people, and I will speak’—testimony is only given to one who listens; therefore Scripture first says ‘Hear,’ then ‘I will speak.’”

Hearing creates the vessel for divine speech.

נמצא שנעשה הדיבור על ידיהם כמ"ש בזוה"ק פ' בלק.

“Thus the utterance is made through them, as stated in the Zohar.”

Israel’s spiritual readiness completes the revelation from above.

הקבצו ושמעו היא השמיעה.

“‘Assemble and listen’ refers to the act of hearing.”

This is the receptive phase—the grounding of inspiration.

ואחז"ל קלקלתם נעשה הזהרו בנשמע.

“And the sages said: You damaged the ‘We will do’; therefore be careful with the ‘We will hear.’”

Since the higher level faltered, emphasis shifts to steady listening.

כי זו ההקדמה שהיא למעלה מן הטבע לא נתקיימה בידינו.

“For that precedence—beyond nature—did not remain with us.”

Israel lost hold of the supernatural readiness of Sinai.

ומעין זה עצמו הי' בהשבטים אם הי' מתאספים כרצונו הי' ניתקן הכל.

“And this occurred similarly with the tribes: had they gathered as Jacob wished, everything would have been repaired.”

Their unity could have restored the lost Sinai level.

כי באמת בנ"י מוכנים לזה ויכולים להגאל כהרף עין.

“For truly Israel is prepared for this and can be redeemed in an instant.”

Redemption depends on inner readiness, not external conditions.

כמו שהי' בקבלת התורה כשהקדימו נעשה לנשמע היו מוכנים להיות חירות ממיתה.

“As at Sinai, when they placed ‘We will do’ before ‘We will hear,’ they were ready to be freed from death.”

Their spiritual elevation transcended mortality.

וז"ש אלקים אתם כו'.

“Thus it says: ‘You are divine beings.’”

This verse reflects the potential for elevated existence.

ואז נעשים בני חורין כיון שמתעלים מן הטבע.

“Then they become free, for they rise above nature.”

Freedom is achieved through spiritual transcendence.

וכל הגלות רק בבחי' הטבע.

“And all exile exists only within the realm of nature.”

Exile is a state of spiritual limitation.

וכשמתדבקין בעץ החיים [מתעלים מן הטבע].

“And when they cleave to the Tree of Life, they rise above nature.”

The Torah elevates beyond natural constraint.

והוא השטר חירות שרמז במד' שרצה יעקב למסור להם.

“This is the document of freedom which, the Midrash implies, Jacob wished to give them.”

Unity and Torah-rootedness would have granted them spiritual liberty.

וכיון שלא הי' התיקון כראוי הזהיר אותם בשמיעה.

“And since the repair was not complete, he warned them regarding listening.”

Only through attentive hearing could they still advance.

והם ב' פרשיות שבק"ש שאומרים בכל יום.

“These are the two sections of the Shema recited daily.”

They reflect the two spiritual modes of action and hearing.

שמע כו' ה' אחד היא מס"נ.

“‘Hear… the Lord is One’ is self-sacrifice.”

The first paragraph expresses total unity and devotion.

ואיתא בשם האר"י ז"ל אם הי' מכוונים ביחוד כראוי הי' נעשה הגאולה מיד.

“And it is taught in the name of the Ari: if one would properly intend the unity, the redemption would occur immediately.”

True contemplation of divine oneness unleashes redemption.

ואח"כ פ' והי' אם שמוע בחי' נשמע.

“Afterward, the section ‘If you will surely listen’ corresponds to the level of ‘We will hear.’”

This is the grounded, receptive phase.

אח"כ פ' יצי"מ רמז לגאולה שע"י פרשיות שבק"ש מתעורר הגאולה.

“Then the section of the Exodus hints at redemption, for through the Shema sections redemption is awakened.”

Daily recitation activates the dynamics of geulah.

Jacob’s call to gather and listen reflects two spiritual modes—transcendent doing and grounded hearing. Their proper unification enables Israel to rise above nature and awaken redemption, a process reenacted daily in the Shema.
