במדרש למה פרשה זו סתומה שנסתמו עיניהם ולבם של ישראל.

“In the Midrash: Why is this portion closed? Because the eyes and hearts of Israel were closed.”

The Sefat Emet explains that the ‘closed’ portion reflects an inner spiritual constriction that befell Israel.

ד"א שביקש לגלות הקץ ונסתם ממנו.

“Another explanation: Jacob sought to reveal the end, but it was concealed from him.”

Jacob’s prophetic vision was blocked, symbolizing that the ultimate future cannot yet be disclosed.

הגם כי לא הי' השיעבוד בימי השבטים.

“Although the actual bondage had not yet begun in the days of the tribes.”

The tribes lived before the formal exile in Egypt, yet another form of exile was already felt.

אבל מקודם הרגישו הגלות בפנימיות בעבודת הש"י שזה העין והלב בחי' תש"ר ותש"י.

“But beforehand they sensed the exile inwardly in their service of God — the ‘eye’ and the ‘heart,’ the aspects of Tefillin of the head and Tefillin of the arm.”

The exile first manifests as inner dullness in perception (eye) and emotion (heart), symbolized by the two forms of tefillin.

כמ"ש במ"א שהוא בחי' יוסף ויהודה.

“As explained elsewhere: these correspond to the aspects of Joseph and Judah.”

Joseph relates to the spiritual-intellectual dimension; Judah to practical devotion.

ותש"י הוא התקשרות הגוף להש"י נגד הלב.

“The arm-tefillin represents the body’s attachment to God, corresponding to the heart.”

This is the internal emotional side of divine service.

ותש"ר התקשרות מן המוח שהוא בחי' הנשמות.

“And the head-tefillin represents connection through the mind, the level of the souls.”

This is the higher intellectual-spiritual connection.

וזה עצמו פי' האספו הקבצו.

“And this is the meaning of ‘Assemble, gather together.’”

The unity of these two modes of service is what Jacob called for.

ובוודאי אם הי' להם התאספות והקיבוץ כראוי הי' מגלה להם הקץ.

“Surely, had they achieved proper assembly and unity, he would have revealed the end to them.”

Unity among the tribes would have opened the possibility for prophetic revelation.

ופִי' הקץ כמ"ש אשר יקרא אתכם באחרית הימים.

“And the explanation of ‘the end’ is as written: ‘that which shall befall you in the end of days.’”

The ‘end’ refers to the ultimate unfolding of Israel’s destiny.

כי השבטים הם ההארות שמתפשטין מבחי' האבות עד סוף כל הדורות.

“For the tribes are the radiances that spread from the level of the Patriarchs to all generations.”

The tribes transmit ancestral spiritual light throughout history.

וכ' ויקרא יעקב א"ב.

“And it is written: ‘And Jacob called his sons.’”

Jacob summons them to confer roles and blessings.

קריאה הוא התמנות.

“Calling is an act of appointment.”

To call someone is to designate their spiritual function.

כמ"ש במדרשים ישראל מקוראי.

“As stated in the Midrash: Israel are ‘those who are called.’”

The nation’s identity is rooted in divine calling.

כי השבטים הם תקרות העולם.

“For the tribes are the ceilings of the world.”

They form the spiritual structure of creation.

ד' דגלים.

“The four banners.”

The tribes arranged around the Mishkan in four camps.

י"ב גבולי אלכסון.

“The twelve diagonal boundaries.”

A mystical description of the tribes as cosmic axes.

וסידר אותם יעקב אבינו כ"א על מקומו והתאחדו בהם כל הדורות.

“And Jacob our father arranged each in its place, and in them all generations were unified.”

Jacob assigns each tribe its eternal spiritual role.

ועליהם נאמר גבורי כח עושי דברו.

“Of them it is said: ‘Mighty in strength, doers of His word.’”

The tribes manifest divine action in the world.

כמ"ש וזאת אשר דיבר להם.

“As written: ‘And this is what he spoke to them.’”

The blessings define their active roles.

כי הם בעשי'.

“For they are in the realm of action.”

The tribes embody mitzvah–deeds.

ושורש האבות הוא גבוה מכל העשי'.

“But the root of the Patriarchs is higher than all action.”

The Patriarchs reflect pure divine illumination.

כמ"ש הן הן המרכבה.

“As stated: ‘They are the chariot.’”

The Patriarchs are vehicles for the divine presence.

והוא בחי' אור תורה.

“This is the level of the light of Torah.”

The Torah-light originates in the Patriarchs’ spiritual root.

והשבטים הם בחי' נר מצוה שהם התפשטות הארת התורה בכלים.

“And the tribes are the level of ‘the lamp of the mitzvah,’ the diffusion of Torah-light into vessels.”

They translate spiritual illumination into concrete observance.

שהם תרי"ג מצות.

“Which are the 613 commandments.”

The mitzvot are the vessels of divine light.

וכ"כ ויכל יעקב לצוות את בניו ויאסוף רגליו כו'.

“Thus it is written: ‘And Jacob finished commanding his sons and gathered his feet…’”

Jacob concludes placing each tribe into its destined role.

פי' שהדביק אותם אליו כמו שמדליקין הנרות באור והניח כוחו בהם.

“Meaning: he attached them to himself as one lights candles from a flame, and left his strength within them.”

Jacob bequeathed his inner spiritual power to the tribes.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the tribes channel the Patriarchs’ spiritual light into concrete action. Had they been unified, Jacob could have revealed the end. Their structure forms the spiritual architecture of all generations.
