In the verse “Ben porat Yosef… a charm upon the eye; daughters strode upon the wall.”

The Sefat Emet opens by recalling Jacob’s blessing to Joseph, whose wording hints at protective spiritual qualities.

My grandfather of blessed memory explained, based on the Gemara, that because Joseph sanctified his eyes, he merited that offerings in the Mishkan at Shiloh could be eaten “by anyone who sees,” and in Jerusalem within the walls; and this is the meaning of “daughters strode upon the wall”—the tribes.

The Rebbe’s grandfather connects Joseph’s purity of sight with a halakhic privilege: offerings at Shiloh could be eaten wherever they were visible. The “daughters” are the tribes situated around their boundaries.

And Joseph was “upon the eye.”

Joseph’s spiritual power centered on elevated vision—pure perception.

And now we will explain, in our way, “porat upon the eye.”

The Sefat Emet begins offering his own interpretation of the phrase.

As it is written: “And Joseph will place his hand upon your eyes.”

The verse about Joseph closing Jacob’s eyes forms the basis for a symbolic explanation of spiritual sight.

For the form of our father Jacob is engraved beneath the Throne of Glory, and it is the form through which God created the world.

Jacob’s spiritual archetype is the divine template for creation.

And regarding this it is written, “And God saw all that He had made, and behold it was very good.”

The goodness of creation is linked to Jacob’s archetypal form.

And this form, called “the eye of Jacob,” certainly exists eternally within the collective of Israel, as in “all who see them will recognize them.”

Jacob’s spiritual “eye” is present in the entire people as a mark of divine identity.

But the world is not worthy for this eye to be revealed among the wicked.

The divine image cannot manifest openly in environments dominated by evil.

And when Israel would assemble together in the Temple and separate from the nations, this form would rest upon them; this is the meaning of the pilgrimage festivals—“All your males shall appear.”

The collective purity and unity of Israel during pilgrimage allowed Jacob’s spiritual form to manifest.

And these structures—the Mishkan and the Temple—were walls established by Israel to create separation between themselves and others.

The sanctuaries acted as protective boundaries enabling revelation.

Then, when they separate and assemble, they gain connection to the form of Jacob.

Unity plus sanctity grants access to their spiritual root.

And this is the meaning of “Gather yourselves and I will tell you…”

Jacob’s call to gather is itself a call to attain this spiritual connection.

And this is eternally true whenever they are able to gather properly, as explained elsewhere.

Proper unity always draws divine revelation.

However, Joseph the righteous had the power that the evil eye could not rule over him, as the Sages said regarding “and they shall multiply like fish.”

Joseph uniquely transcended harmful spiritual forces.

Therefore he could receive holy illumination even while among the wicked.

Joseph’s purity allowed him to thrive spiritually in Egypt.

Thus he was the one who prepared a place in Egypt for the Children of Israel.

Joseph spiritually enabled Israel to survive exile.

And Jacob our father feared descending to Egypt lest an evil eye rule over that form, and God told him: “And Joseph will place his hand…”

Joseph’s protection reassured Jacob that his spiritual form would remain intact.

And this is the meaning of “porat upon the eye.”

Joseph’s blessing refers to his capacity to rise above harmful sight.

And these are two forms of spiritual service.

There is a path of separation and a path of inner strength.

The tribes prepared strategies to serve as separating walls.

Their path was protective withdrawal.

And Joseph prepared a place that blinded the eyes of the wicked so they could not gaze and block the light from the righteous.

Joseph’s holiness neutralized negative influence at its source.

And on Shabbat a reflection of Joseph’s blessing is fulfilled, as God spreads over us a shelter of peace.

Shabbat itself grants Joseph-like protection from harmful forces.

Therefore the Sages said that the radiance of a person’s face on Shabbat is unlike that of weekdays.

Protected illumination shines more openly on Shabbat.

Because there is protection, the aspect of the eye of Jacob rests upon Israel automatically.

With spiritual danger removed, Jacob’s form manifests naturally.

And this is the extra soul of Shabbat.

The “neshamah yeteira” is this heightened spiritual visibility.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Jacob’s divine form—“the eye of Jacob”—rests upon Israel when they gather in holiness. Joseph’s unique purity allowed him to manifest this light even within Egypt, shielding Israel from harmful forces. Shabbat brings a weekly taste of Joseph’s protective blessing, enabling the revelation of this spiritual eye as the “extra soul.”
