Inner Renewal Through Holiness

ומה שיש ללמוד מפרשה זו להכין לעצמו בימים הטובים שנתגלה הקדושה בהם.
And what one must learn from this parashah is to prepare himself, during the good days when holiness is revealed.
The Sefat Emet teaches that revealed moments of holiness are times for inner preparation.
לקבוע ההארות בלב היטב כדי להיות על ימי הרע כשהקדושה נסתרת.
To firmly establish those illuminations in the heart in order to withstand the bad days, when holiness is hidden.
The purpose of good days is to store spiritual strength for times of concealment.
וכמ"ש ביום טובה היה בטוב פי' הי' לקבוע ההארה בגוף האדם.
As it is said: “On a good day be in good,” meaning: fix the illumination within the human body.
Goodness must be embodied, not merely felt.
וביום רעה ראה עתה איך להתנהג אח"כ.
And on a bad day, see now how to behave afterward.
Hard times require reflection shaped by earlier light.
כי קודם כל נסיון יש הארה איך ללמוד על אח"כ.
For before every trial there is an illumination from which to learn for afterward.
Divine guidance precedes challenges.
ואפשר הי' ג"כ רמז ליוסף שבזמן זה שימלוך במצרים יכין על ימי הגלות.
And perhaps this also hinted to Joseph, that during his rule in Egypt he should prepare for the days of exile.
Joseph’s ascent served to ready Israel for exile.
וכן הי' כמ"ש במדרש שע"י יוסף הצדיק נגדרו בעריות.
And so it was, as the Midrash says: through Joseph the righteous Israel was guarded from immorality.
Joseph’s purity protected the nation.
ובאמת ע"י בפי' יוסף יכולין למצוא הארה גם בעת ההסתר.
And truly, through the aspect of Joseph one can find illumination even during concealment.
Joseph symbolizes inner light that persists in darkness.
כתיב שער החצר הפנימית הפונה קדים.
It is written: “The gate of the inner courtyard that faces east.”
This “gate” hints at an inner opening toward renewal.
פי' בחי' ראשית הכח שיש בכל דבר שמשם יש התחדשות תמיד קודם שנטבע בתוך הטבע וההרגל.
This means the primal point of strength in every thing, from which renewal always flows before it becomes fixed in nature and habit.
The eastward gate is the root-force preceding habit.
ששת ימי המעשה יהי' סגור שבחול הם ימי עבודה למצוא נקודה הפנימית כנ"ל.
The six weekdays shall be closed, for weekdays are for the labor of finding the inner point.
Workdays are for uncovering hidden inwardness.
אך ע"י שבת וחודש יכולין למצוא גם בחול.
But through Shabbat and the new month one can find it even within weekdays.
Holy times spill their light into ordinary days.
ונ"ל ממ"ש יפתח ולא כ' יהי' נפתח.
And it seems to me from the wording “it shall open (yiftach)” and not “it shall be opened.”
The opening depends on human initiative.
משמע שיום השבת והחודש הם המפתחות אשר יכול אדם לפתוח בהם הפנימיות גם בימי המעשה.
This implies that Shabbat and the new month are keys by which a person can open the inner point even during weekdays.
Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh unlock spiritual inwardness.
והוא בחי' יוסף שומר הברית.
And this is the aspect of Joseph, the guardian of the covenant.
Joseph represents guarding inner holiness.
פי' ברית. הפנימיות שיש בכל דבר והנקודה נק' ברית.
The covenant means the innerness within every thing, and this point is called “covenant.”
The covenant is the core spark linking creation to God.
כי נקודה זו היא אות ברית בין הבורא... להחיות הנבראים.
For this point is the sign of the covenant between the Creator and the created beings, sent to enliven them.
The inner point is the life-force itself.
וכשהאדם שומר תמיד נקודה זו שביום השבת...
And when a person continually guards this point that becomes revealed on Shabbat...
Shabbat reveals and strengthens the inner covenant.
וזה סיוע לימי העבודה.
And this is assistance for the workdays.
Shabbat empowers weekday avodah.
וחודש ג"כ ענין הפנימיות.
The new month too is an aspect of inwardness.
Rosh Chodesh brings renewal from within.
רק שבת ע"י ביטול ועלי'... וחודש ע"י אמונה.
But Shabbat works through self-nullification and ascent, while the month works through faith.
Shabbat elevates; the month renews through trust.
ולכך חודש תלוי בישראל שיקדשו החודש...
Therefore the month depends on Israel, who sanctify it...
Human faith activates renewal.
וכ' אין כל חדש תחת השמש...
As it is written: “There is nothing new under the sun,” for nature brings routine and renewal is forgotten.
Without holiness, habit smothers renewal.
רק ע"י ימים הנ"ל יכולין למצוא התחדשות...
Only through these days can one find renewal from above the sun.
Shabbat and Chodesh restore supra-natural newness.
וגם כל הגלות הוא זה שנסתר הפנימיות...
And the entire exile is the concealment of the inner point beneath the “evil cows.”
Exile hides inner life.
וע"י שמירת הברית... יכולין למצוא ההארה גם בגלות.
And through guarding the covenant one can find illumination even in exile.
The covenant opens light even in darkness.
ואפשר ז"ש בלעדי אלקים יענה...
And perhaps this is the meaning of “Aside from God, He will answer,” indicating the dream can be fulfilled only through Joseph’s self-effacement.
Joseph’s humility draws divine wisdom.
וכן אח"כ כ' במד' שלא התחיל גלות מצרים עד שלא שמרו הברית...
And similarly the Midrash says the Egyptian exile began only when Israel ceased guarding the covenant.
Failing the covenant causes inner renewal to be lost.
ולכך גם שם חנוכה... חזרו לבוא להתחדשות.
Therefore on Chanukah, when they left the Greek exile, they returned to renewal.
Chanukah restores hidden inner light.
וכ' יפתח... ע"י חיפוש ורצון יכולין לעורר להיות נפתח.
And “it shall open” means that through seeking and desire one can arouse the opening.
Human yearning unlocks the inner gate.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Joseph, Shabbat, and Rosh Chodesh embody the power of inner renewal, enabling one to carry hidden holiness even through exile and concealment.
