בפסוק האספו ואגידה לכם כו' יקרא אתכם באחרית הימים.
“In the verse ‘Gather yourselves and I will tell you … that will befall you in the end of days.’”
The Sefat Emet opens by noting that Jacob’s call to gather hints at a revelation concerning the future, the “end of days.”
דרשו חז"ל כי פרשה זו הכנה על הגלות ולכן אמרו שביקש לגלות הקץ.
“Our sages taught that this section is preparation for the exile, and therefore they said that he sought to reveal the end.”
This links Jacob’s speech to the coming exile and the hidden redemption.
כי הנה השבטים המה העמודים אשר כל בנ"י נשען עליהם בגלות.
“For the tribes are the pillars upon which all Israel relies in exile.”
The tribes serve as spiritual supports sustaining Israel throughout exile.
כי הג' אבות הם למעלה מעלמא דפירודא.
“For the three Patriarchs are above the realm of separation.”
The Patriarchs exist in a realm of unity beyond worldly fragmentation.
והשבטים המה הולכים עד אחרית הימים.
“And the tribes continue until the end of days.”
The tribes accompany Israel through all generations, reaching the final redemption.
ומכלל שאמר האספו הקבצו. משמע שהמה בעלמא דפירודא כענין שנא' עם אחד מפוזר ומפורד בה"ע.
“From his saying ‘assemble, gather,’ it implies that they are in the realm of separation, as it says: ‘a single nation scattered and dispersed.’”
The call to gather suggests dispersion—Israel’s condition in exile.
פי' שבנ"י המה מבררין האחדות גם בעלמא דפירודא.
“This means that Israel clarifies unity even within the realm of separation.”
Israel’s task is to reveal divine oneness amid fragmentation.
ולכן איתא במדרשות כי הד' דגלים המה מוכנים לעקור הד' מלכיות.
“Therefore the Midrash teaches that the four banners are prepared to uproot the four kingdoms.”
The tribal formations counteract oppressive empires.
ואיתא במד' בראשית ומשם יפרד כו' שם הא' פישון כו' דורש על המלכיות ע"ש.
“And the Midrash in Genesis interprets the rivers from which division spreads as referring to the kingdoms.”
The rivers flowing out of Eden symbolize forces of worldly power.
וכי יעלה עה"ד כי הראשים אשר מתפרדין מגן עדן הם הד' מלכיות.
“Could one imagine that the heads emerging from Eden are the four kingdoms?”
The Sefat Emet rejects equating Eden’s purity with oppressive regimes.
רק הנהרות המושכין מג"ע עד עלמא דפירודא שהם הם הדגלים.
“Rather, the rivers flowing from Eden into the realm of separation are the banners.”
The tribal banners carry Eden’s spiritual flow into a fragmented world.
כענין שנא' כד' רוחות השמים פרשתי אתכם.
“As it is said: ‘I have spread you out like the four winds of heaven.’”
Israel’s dispersion parallels divine extension through the four directions.
והמה עומדין במקום שליטת המלכיות כענין שנאמר יצב גבולות עמים למספר בנ"י.
“And they stand in the place where the kingdoms rule, as it says: ‘He set the borders of nations according to the number of Israel.’”
The tribes’ presence anchors holiness within lands dominated by nations.
והם הי"ב שבטים.
“These are the twelve tribes.”
The twelvefold structure relates to Israel’s cosmic role.
והאבות הם בג"ע לעולם.
“And the Patriarchs remain forever in Eden.”
The Patriarchs dwell eternally in the realm of unity.
והשבטים המה עולים ויורדים להעלות התחתונים.
“And the tribes ascend and descend to elevate the lower realms.”
The tribes act as conduits between heaven and earth.
ולכן רמז אשר יקרא אתכם.
“Thus he hinted: ‘that will befall you.’”
The message applies to the tribes’ enduring mission.
וקשה אי הכוונה על זרעם אחריהם הול"ל אותנו.
“If he meant their descendants, he should have said ‘us.’”
The wording requires explanation.
כי גם הוא אבינו.
“For he is our father as well.”
Jacob includes all Israel.
אך הרמז שהשבטים הולכים עם בנ"י עד סוף כל הדורות כנ"ל.
“Rather, the hint is that the tribes accompany Israel through all generations.”
Their influence persists eternally.
ועל זכות השבטים מבקשין ברוגז אהבה תזכור שהמה אוהבי הקב"ה כדכ' ודגלו עלי אהבה.
“By the merit of the tribes we ask: ‘In wrath remember love,’ for they are lovers of God.”
The tribes embody love toward God.
והם הי"ב שבטים ויוסף המאחד אותם כי אהבה גי' אחד.
“They are the twelve tribes, and Joseph unifies them, for ‘love’ equals ‘one.’”
Joseph provides unifying love among the tribes.
וכאשר הי' חוקקין שמות השבטים על לב אהרן לזכרון לפני הש"י.
“Their names were engraved on Aaron’s heart as a remembrance before God.”
The priestly breastplate embodies tribal unity.
[ויתכן לומר כי האבות נק' רעים דלא מתפרשין והשבטים דודים].
“It may be said: the Patriarchs are called ‘companions who do not separate,’ and the tribes ‘beloved ones.’”
A distinction between unity above and love extending below.
ובאמת האבות והשבטים המה כלים אשר הכין השי"ת לקיום העולמות.
“Truly, the Patriarchs and tribes are vessels prepared by God for the world’s endurance.”
They form the spiritual infrastructure of creation.
ובפרט בנ"י הבוחרים בדרכיהם צריכין להתחזק בזכות השרשים כדכתי' הבו לה' בני אלים.
“Israel, choosing their ways, must strengthen themselves through these roots.”
The tribes’ foundations empower Israel’s service.
ובענין המלכיות נראה דכ' מלכותך מלכות כל עולמים והכל לכבודו ברא.
“Regarding the kingdoms: ‘Your kingdom is a kingdom over all worlds; all was created for His glory.’”
Worldly kingdoms exist within God’s greater sovereignty.
ובאמת לבנ"י בעצם הנהגת הבורא ית' עמהם בבחי' אב ע"י התורה והדעת שבנ"י מבינים כי לה' הארץ ומלואה והיא בחי' אבות.
“With Israel, God’s conduct is in the aspect of a Father through Torah and understanding.”
This parallels the Patriarchal level of unity.
אך בחי' המלכות היא לברר ביד חזקה להלחם עם המורדים במלכות שמים.
“But the aspect of kingship is to clarify—with a strong hand—against rebels to Heaven.”
Divine kingship confronts opposition.
וזה יתקיים לעתיד.
“This will be fulfilled in the future.”
The ultimate clarification awaits redemption.
וע"ז נשתלחו בנ"י בעלמא דפרודא לברר ולהעיד על עול מלכות שמים.
“Israel was sent into the realm of separation to clarify and testify to the yoke of Heaven.”
Exile serves a divine mission.
וזהו בחי' הי"ב שבטים והדגלים ללחום מלחמות ה'.
“This is the aspect of the twelve tribes and banners: to fight the battles of God.”
They struggle spiritually against forces opposing God.
כדאי' י"ב מנהיגים במלחמה.
“As it is taught: twelve leaders in battle.”
The tribes embody leadership roles in this struggle.
ובנ"י לבסוף יתקנו הכל בבחי' בן ובבחי' עבד.
“Israel will ultimately rectify everything through the aspects of ‘son’ and ‘servant.’”
Service and intimacy complete the cosmic repair.
והם ב' העבודות שצריכין לעבוד אותו ית'.
“These are the two modes of service required of them.”
Both aspects are essential.
