Redemption of Body and Soul

Bo · תרס"ד (1903) · Essay 1

“All the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt.”

The Sefat Emet begins by noting that the exodus included every aspect of God’s “hosts,” implying a total, all‑encompassing liberation.

“‘All’—to include the hosts above and below.” (Mekhilta)

The Midrash teaches that the redemption affected both the upper spiritual realms and the lower earthly realms, showing that the Exodus had cosmic reach.

So too for the Children of Israel themselves: the redemption was in both soul and body, for both had been under Egypt’s domination.

Israel’s bondage was not merely physical slavery; it touched their inner spiritual life as well, and therefore the liberation had to address both dimensions.

And likewise, after we left Egypt in both body and soul…

The Sefat Emet emphasizes continuity—once freed in dual form, Israel is now prepared for a dual form of divine service.

…so did the Holy One bring us to accept the yoke of Heaven in both body and soul.

Redemption leads directly to accepting God’s sovereignty, and this acceptance must permeate both physical action and inner consciousness.

And the first mitzvah at Passover is the repair of the body through the positive and negative commandments that relate to the limbs and sinews.

The Passover rituals realign the physical self, training the body to act in holiness through concrete commandments.

And afterward, the receiving of the Torah is the repair of the soul.

Shavuot completes what Pesach begins: once the body is purified, the Torah refines the inner spiritual faculties.

Therefore there are four passages in the tefillin…

Each passage corresponds to one aspect of this dual physical‑spiritual process.

Two for the Exodus—body and soul.

The first pair recalls the dual liberation from Egypt.

And two for the receiving of the Torah and mitzvot—soul and body.

The second pair affirms the ongoing dual commitment to Torah in both inner intention and outward deed.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that both the Exodus and the acceptance of God’s kingship operate on two levels—body and soul. The rituals of Pesach, the giving of the Torah, and the structure of tefillin all express this dual, integrated path of redemption and divine service.
