Creation Through Twenty-Two Letters
The children of Israel were called the hosts of God.
This means Israel is identified as the divine “army,” those who manifest God’s presence in the world.
For it is written: “It is a sign in His army.”
The word “sign” hints that Israel embodies the divine letters that form God’s forces in creation.
As it is written: “You are My witnesses, says God.”
Israel’s role is to testify to God’s presence through the divine signs inhering within them.
This hints to the twenty-two letters which are called “the utterance of God.”
The letters themselves are God’s speech, the medium of revelation.
The twenty-two letters through which God created all the worlds.
Creation unfolds through the divine alphabet.
As taught: a Torah scholar is recognized by his speech, as the sages said: “Let another praise you, not your own mouth.”
A person’s words reveal inner wisdom.
Rather, open your mouth in Torah, and through this your wisdom is revealed.
True identity emerges through Torah speech.
So too, the Holy One cannot be recognized except through “The opening of Your words gives light.”
God becomes known through the divine words of Torah.
Through the twenty-two letters by which all worlds were created.
The letters are the bridge between God and human understanding.
Through them we can recognize a bit of the Creator’s wisdom.
Our limited grasp of God comes via His linguistic imprint.
As it is written: “Everything He created for His glory.”
Creation itself is testimony to divine intent.
For His purpose, for His testimony.
All existence is a witness to God.
And this is why the world was created through ten utterances.
The structure of creation mirrors divine speech.
But through sin, knowledge of good and evil became mixed.
Human perception became distorted.
And truth became hidden by the wicked, who destroy the world created with the ten utterances.
Spiritual corruption obscures divine clarity.
But in Israel the letters remain, renewed in the Ten Commandments.
The Sinai revelation restored purity to the divine letters.
Therefore “You are My witnesses” refers to Israel, who recognize the power of the twenty-two letters of Torah.
Israel testifies through its connection to Torah’s letters.
In the future: “I will transform the nations to a clear language to call all of them in God’s name.”
The clarification of divine speech will spread to all peoples.
But now truth is absent, and this world is a world of falsehood.
Current reality hides the divine.
Therefore Israel needs assistance in their testimony to the Creator.
Additional signs support their witness.
Thus God gave us tefillin on arm and head to subdue desires of the heart and thoughts of the mind.
Tefillin align inner faculties with divine truth.
So that we can testify truthfully.
Proper inner alignment enables genuine testimony.
The sages said: One who recites Shema without tefillin is like one who gives false testimony.
Testimony requires full commitment.
For a true witness must know that nothing exists besides Him.
Testimony hinges on absolute divine unity.
And that the entire world is testimony to Him.
Creation itself is the witness.
Thus it says: “So that the Torah of God will be in your mouth.”
Tefillin enable authentic Torah expression.
Is there Torah that is not from God?
This emphasizes that Torah is fully divine.
Rather, Torah teaches us to understand and perceive Godliness in the world.
Torah is the lens of divine perception.
And all of Torah explains the Name of God.
Torah reveals the deepest divine identity.
Therefore the foundation of the commandments is “I am the Lord your God.”
All mitzvot flow from divine presence.
This is the Torah of God.
The divine essence expressed in law.
Thus: “You have been shown to know that the Lord is God.”
Revelation is given to enable certainty.
For all knowledge and wisdom God gives a person is to know Him and serve Him.
Human intellect is a tool for divine service.
But through the primordial sin, knowledge became mixed.
Human clarity was compromised.
But through the Exodus and Torah, knowledge was purified.
Redemption restored spiritual clarity.
As it says: “So that all the nations of the earth may know.”
The goal is universal awareness of God.
And through Israel, knowledge will be clarified in the future.
Israel becomes the conduit of global enlightenment.
Therefore on Shabbat no tefillin are needed, for Shabbat itself is a sign.
Shabbat embodies the divine testimony directly.
This sign is His “army,” as mentioned above.
Shabbat is the highest witness.
And it was clarified through the Exodus.
The Exodus reveals Shabbat's essence.
This is renewed through tefillin and Shabbat as remembrance of the Exodus.
Both rituals restore clarity of faith.
For Shabbat is a heritage without boundaries.
Shabbat transcends limitation.
Just as Egypt was the root of all constraints, from which no slave could escape.
Egypt represents maximal spiritual constriction.
A place where nature dominated most strongly.
Nature concealed the divine.
A harsh king and a harsh land.
Both ruler and environment embodied oppression.
And it is the opposite of the Land of Israel, described as good and spacious.
Israel symbolizes spiritual freedom.
There is the place of freedom, where testimony is clarified.
In Israel, divine truth becomes manifest.
As it is written: “God is known in her fortresses as a stronghold.”
God becomes perceptible through holy dwelling.
Similarly, time also conceals truth.
Temporal existence hides the eternal.
But on Shabbat, it is a heritage without boundaries.
Shabbat breaks through temporal limitation.
So too, in the souls of Israel is an aspect of freedom.
Israel’s inner essence is liberation.
Thus: “He desired us and gave us His holy Shabbat.”
Shabbat is the gift that reveals this freedom.
And likewise: “You desired and gave our fathers a precious, good, spacious land.”
Both Shabbat and the Land express divine favor and freedom.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel’s identity as God’s witnesses derives from the twenty-two divine letters through which the world was created. Though sin obscured clarity, Torah, tefillin, Shabbat, and the Exodus restore pure knowledge. Shabbat and the Land of Israel embody ultimate freedom, enabling Israel to reveal divine truth to the world.
