Israel Testifying to Divine Will

Bo · תרס"א (1900) · Essay 1

“In the verse: ‘For I have hardened… and in order that you recount…’.”

The Sefat Emet begins by noting that God’s hardening of Pharaoh’s heart is linked to Israel’s mission of telling and revealing God’s acts.

“And in the Midrash: ‘The weight of a stone… and the anger of a fool is heavier than both.’”

The Midrash teaches that the stubbornness of the wicked, like Pharaoh, is heavier and more obstructive than physical burdens.

“And behold, the Children of Israel are witnesses to the Creator, as it is said: ‘You are My witnesses.’”

Israel’s role is to testify to God’s presence and actions in the world.

“Just as they must testify and clarify that the Holy One created the world.”

Their testimony includes affirming creation itself.

“So too they must testify that all free will, human actions, and strategies are all by the will of the Creator—nullifying the anger of the fool who says, ‘By my own power I acted.’”

The mission of Israel is to reveal that even human choices unfold under divine sovereignty.

“And this was revealed to Israel in Egypt.”

The exodus revealed the limits of human power and the supremacy of divine will.

“As it is written: ‘You have been shown to know,’ and Rashi explains that He opened for them the seven heavens.”

God unveiled the spiritual realms to Israel.

“And just as He opened the upper realms, so He opened the lower ones.”

Knowledge of both spiritual and earthly realities was granted.

“And truly, this is the matter of the contradiction between divine knowledge and free will discussed by early and later sages.”

The paradox of God’s foreknowledge and human choice is central to Jewish thought.

“And the truth is that all this is the task of each Jew.”

Every individual must wrestle with and clarify this paradox.

“He can clarify the knowledge of the Creator and nullify ‘choice’—within his own soul and in the world at large.”

By aligning with God, a person diminishes the illusion of autonomous power.

“As we saw that God performed miracles for us, and the Egyptians knew…”

The miracles demonstrated divine mastery even to Egypt.

“And their free will was taken from them.”

Pharaoh’s choices were overridden to reveal God’s power.

“Both in that He strengthened his heart against his will.”

A forced stubbornness served God’s plan.

“And in that he sent us out against his will.”

Pharaoh’s eventual surrender was also compelled.

“And it is written: ‘By the testimony… a matter is established.’”

Truth is affirmed through witnesses.

“For through Israel’s testimony, God’s governance of the world is truly established.”

Israel’s witness actualizes divine revelation.

“As it is said: ‘You are My witnesses, and I am God.’”

God’s divinity becomes manifest through Israel.

“And King David said: ‘I will thank You… Your truth, my God.’”

David affirms that truth belongs to God.

“This is wondrous: truth depends on human labor in a world of falsehood.”

Humans uncover truth amid illusion.

“Thus it is written: ‘Truth shall grow from the earth,’ whose initial letters spell ‘truth.’”

Truth arises from human striving below.

“Therefore truth is hidden in this world.”

Earthly existence veils reality.

“Darkness covers the earth.”

Obscurity is part of creation.

“Above, truth is revealed and clear, and ‘the Lord God is truth.’”

Heaven manifests pure truth.

“But His action is also truth.”

Creation itself bears divine truth.

“This is the aspect of the force of the Actor within the acted-upon.”

God’s imprint resides within creation.

“And this is the divine point within a person.”

Each soul contains a spark of divine truth.

“Thus he said: ‘Your truth, my God.’”

Truth resides within the divine spark.

“For the wicked overturn it.”

Evil distorts divine truth.

“And in their lifetimes they are called dead.”

They lose connection to the divine point.

“And the divine power departs from them.”

The inner spark becomes dormant.

“And truth turns into falsehood for them.”

They perceive reality inversely.

“But the righteous clarify the truth.”

Their work restores clarity.

“And this very matter is clarified to each servant of God according to his effort in serving God.”

Truth is revealed proportionate to spiritual labor.

“As it is said: ‘The ways of the Lord are straight; the righteous walk in them.’”

The righteous advance through divine pathways.

“And in truth, all is through the power of Torah, which is called the Torah of Truth.”

Torah is the ultimate source of revealed truth.

“And there is Written Torah and Oral Torah.”

Both dimensions convey divine truth.

“And see what I wrote in Parashat Vayechi on this matter.”

The Sefat Emet references his earlier elaboration.

The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel’s role is to reveal divine truth in a world of concealment, clarifying the paradox of free will and divine knowledge, and actualizing truth through Torah and spiritual labor.
