Daily Renewal of Torah Letters
“In the verse: ‘And it shall be… for a sign… so that the Torah of God shall be in your mouth… and you shall keep the statute… from days to days.’”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting that the verse links the signs and statutes with the continual presence of Torah in a person’s mouth, suggesting a daily renewal tied to mitzvot.
As it is written: “And I shall place My words in your mouth.”
This verse forms the basis for understanding that God actively places Torah within Israel.
“This is a present‑tense expression, as it says: ‘It did not cease and did not stop.’”
The giving of God’s words is ongoing, not a one‑time event.
“And just as the Exodus preceded the receiving of the Torah.”
The historical sequence models a spiritual pattern: liberation enables revelation.
“So too each day, through remembering the Exodus in deed and speech, one merits the illumination of Torah.”
Daily remembrance of the Exodus creates constant receptivity to new Torah light.
“‘And I shall place’ is a term of arrangement, like ‘They shall place a man over his work.’”
God arranges the words of Torah within a person in an orderly, renewing way.
“Just as the Holy One renews in His goodness each day the forty‑two (paths), which are formed from the twenty‑two letters of the Torah, with a constantly new combination.”
The world is renewed through shifting divine letter‑combinations, reflecting the inner renewal of Torah.
“And regarding this it is taught: each day God renews a halachah in the heavenly academy.”
Even halachah, the structure of Torah, is subject to daily divine renewal.
“So too the letters of Torah engraved in every Jewish soul are renewed each day.”
Each person’s inner Torah inscription is alive and constantly refreshed.
“Thus the Sages said: one who reviews halachot every day is a child of the World‑to‑Come, as it is written ‘The ways of the world are His’—read not ‘ways’ (halichot) but ‘laws’ (halachot).”
Daily learning aligns a person with the divine renewing order.
“Meaning: the ‘ways of the world’ belong to God, Who leads and renews the world each day with a new order; so too a person must renew his own path in serving the Creator every day.”
Human service should mirror divine renewal.
“And this is what is called ‘one who reviews halachot.’”
It refers not only to study but to spiritual movement and renewal.
“For a human being is called a walker.”
Human identity is defined by movement—inner growth.
“Thus He says: ‘I shall place My words in your mouth… to plant the heavens… you are My people.’”
God’s words empower Israel to participate in cosmic renewal.
“The Sages expounded: do not read ‘My people’ (ami) but ‘with Me’ (immi), as partners.”
Israel is framed as a partner in divine creation.
“And even people like us, who do not have the strength to review the halachot that God renews each day.”
Most people cannot reach the level of perceiving the full daily renewal.
“Nevertheless, each day must contain a fresh awakening in the service of God.”
Even a small renewal connects a person to the divine process.
“And through this, we have a share in this renewal.”
Our small awakenings bind us to the heavenly renewal of Torah.
“And through the mitzvot of tefillin, circumcision, and Shabbat—which are the signs and covenants engraved in the souls of Israel.”
These mitzvot form the soul’s deepest spiritual signatures.
“By the power of these mitzvot one can renew the impression and engraving within the soul.”
They reinvigorate the inner spiritual imprint.
“Thus it says: ‘And you shall keep the statute, day by day.’”
The statute requires daily renewal.
“‘And you shall keep’ refers to Mishnah, through toil in Torah.”
Learning itself is the act of guarding.
“Also, the initials of ‘this,’ ‘at its appointed time,’ ‘from days,’ ‘day by day’ form the word milah, as it says: ‘This is My covenant which you shall keep.’”
The verse hints at circumcision as the enduring covenant.
“And it is called ‘this’ because it is a covenant sealed in our flesh, which cannot be changed.”
Milah is immutable, always present.
“As it says regarding it: ‘My covenant is day and night,’ meaning it is fixed always.”
The covenant has continuous permanence.
“And through these mitzvot the Torah of God will truly be in your mouth, as it says: ‘And I shall place My words’—precisely so.”
The mitzvot activate and sustain the divine placing of Torah within us.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Torah is renewed each day, and that humans join this divine renewal through daily remembrance of the Exodus, study, and foundational covenant‑mitzvot. These practices refresh the inner engraving of Torah, enabling God’s words to be continually “placed” in our mouths.
