Israel Set Apart Anew
“This month shall be for you…” Our Sages said that the Torah should have begun only from ‘This month,’ for it is the first commandment given to Israel.
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that the Torah’s true starting point should have been the first mitzvah given to Israel, emphasizing that Israel’s identity is rooted in divine command and renewal.
And why did it begin with Genesis? Because “He told the power of His works,” etc.
The opening of Genesis serves to declare God’s sovereignty over creation, legitimizing Israel’s inheritance of the land.
For the children of Israel were sent into this world to rectify all creatures, and at first they were included among the nations.
Israel’s mission is universal repair, but initially they existed as part of humanity without distinction.
Afterwards He separated us from them.
God later distinguished Israel for the sake of their unique spiritual mission.
And so it was with Abraham, who at first was mixed among them.
Abraham too began within the nations before being set apart.
Afterwards it was said to him: “Go forth from your land,” etc.
His separation begins with the divine call to depart.
And he was given the commandment of circumcision in order to be distinguished from them.
Circumcision becomes the sign of his distinct covenantal identity.
So too Israel was at first mixed among them.
Israel’s historical development mirrors Abraham’s personal journey.
And although Israel always had a connection to the Omnipresent…
Even in mingling among the nations, Israel retained an essential bond with God.
Yet it was in the category of “one who goes out of the general rule teaches about the whole.”
Their distinctiveness served to illuminate the purpose of all humanity.
But now a new path was given to them, the principle that once something emerges as new, it cannot be returned to its former general category.
Israel’s sanctity, once revealed, becomes irreversibly established.
Unless Scripture explicitly returns it to its general category.
Only direct divine instruction can re-integrate what has become distinct.
This will occur in the future, as it is written: “I will turn the nations to a clear language so that all will call upon the name of the Lord.”
In the end of days, the distinction will elevate all nations toward divine unity.
But now a new path has been given to them through the power of Torah and mitzvot.
The present mode of distinction is maintained through commanded action.
And this is the essential difference between Israel and the nations.
Their spiritual vitality comes through mitzvah‑performance.
As the Midrash says: to the descendants of Noah He gave raw, unshaped commandments.
The mitzvot of the nations lack the transformative covenantal energy.
But regarding Israel it is written: “That a person shall do them and live by them.”
The mitzvot grant living spiritual vitality unique to Israel’s service.
That through the mitzvah they receive new life.
Each commandment channels renewed divine vitality into the soul.
“This month shall be for you.”
The mitzvah of the new month symbolizes Israel’s power of renewal.
For every Israelite has the power through mitzvot to awaken renewed holy flow from above.
Mitzvot become conduits for divine renewal.
And for this we bless: “Who sanctified us with His commandments.”
The blessing acknowledges that mitzvot draw holiness into the human realm.
For we are able to draw holiness through the commandments.
This is the core idea: mitzvot empower Israel to bring divine holiness into the world.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel’s distinction, rooted in the first mitzvah of sanctifying the new month, grants them the ability to draw renewed holiness through mitzvot—reflecting a mission of universal elevation that will be completed in the future.
