Tefillin Awakens the Soul
“In the verse: ‘And it shall be … as a sign on your hand and a remembrance between your eyes, so that the Torah of God shall be in your mouth…’”
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining the purpose of tefillin as a sign and reminder that enables the Torah to be present within a person.
“Our sages said: One who puts on tefillin is as though he is engaged in Torah.”
Wearing tefillin is considered an act equivalent to Torah study.
“And the tefillin, which are a remembrance of the Exodus, bring freedom to a person.”
Tefillin carry the spiritual power of the Exodus, which grants inner liberation.
“For there is no free person except one who engages in Torah.”
True freedom is the freedom of the soul awakened by Torah engagement.
“And likewise one who puts on tefillin.”
Therefore, tefillin also grant this same inner freedom.
“And in truth, the essence of freedom is the awakening of the soul’s power within a person.”
Freedom is defined as the activation of the soul.
“And through Torah, the soul shines within a person.”
Torah is the means through which the soul’s light manifests.
“And likewise through tefillin.”
Tefillin similarly stimulate the illumination of the soul.
“Therefore the sages said: One who reads the Shema without tefillin is like one who testifies falsely about himself.”
Declaring God’s unity requires the presence of the soul’s illumination that tefillin bring.
“Because the declaration ‘The Lord our God, the Lord is One’ is only true when the soul shines within a person.”
True unity of God can be affirmed only from an awakened soul.
“As it is said: ‘I am the Lord your God’—in the unique unity with which I placed My Name upon you—especially upon the souls of Israel.”
God’s unity is specially manifest in the souls of Israel.
“As it is written: ‘Those who are here today’—meaning all the souls were present at the giving of the Torah.”
All Jewish souls participated in Sinai, linking them eternally to divine unity.
“And since through tefillin the levels of nefesh, ruach, and neshamah shine within a person…”
Tefillin activate all three primary soul layers.
“For the compartments, passages, and Divine Names in them allude to nefesh, ruach, and neshamah.”
The physical structure of tefillin corresponds to the soul’s structure.
“Then one can truly say: ‘The Lord is One.’”
Only with the soul illuminated can the Shema be authentically declared.
“Therefore on Shabbat, when the soul shines on its own, tefillin are unnecessary.”
Shabbat itself awakens the soul, making tefillin superfluous.
“And Shabbat, like tefillin, is a remembrance of the Exodus.”
Both serve as reminders of the spiritual liberation of the soul.
“For the illumination of the soul is testimony to the Exodus.”
The soul’s awakening is itself a witness to liberation.
“Thus it says, ‘I am the Lord your God who took you out,’ as explained elsewhere.”
The Exodus is the foundation of divine revelation and soul awakening.
Summary: Tefillin and Torah awaken the soul, enabling true recognition of God’s unity; this illumination parallels the freedom of the Exodus and the sanctity of Shabbat.
