Unity of Body and Soul

“In the Midrash: ‘One with one they shall approach,’ etc.”

The Sefat Emet opens by citing the Midrash, which teaches that all spiritual processes aim toward a movement of unification—‘one approaching one.’

For the purpose of all deeds is to come to the unity of truth.

All human actions are meant to reveal the underlying oneness of divine reality.

And in truth, the soul is the essence of unity, for it is a portion of the Divine above.

The soul inherently reflects divine oneness because it originates in God.

But the Holy One placed the soul within a body so that this unity would also become clarified in the body.

The task of human life is to reveal divine oneness not only spiritually but through the physical self.

And all is testimony to the Creator, who is One and whose Name is One.

Both soul and body ultimately bear witness to the singularity of God.

And these are two aspects: the Written Torah, like the soul within the body, like the divine Name within the parchment.

The Written Torah reflects the soul‑dimension—pure, inner revelation clothed in physical form.

And the Oral Torah is the rectification of the limbs, to bring them into the illumination of the soul.

The Oral Torah guides the practical transformation of the body so it can receive the soul’s light.

For the Oral Torah depends upon the Written Torah and flows from it.

The two Torahs parallel body and soul: one expressing the other.

And when a person is properly rectified, soul and body become one unity.

The perfected human being achieves harmony of inner and outer self.

And so too within Israel as a whole there are righteous ones whose essence is the aspect of soul.

Within the collective body of the nation, some individuals embody the spiritual core.

Thus Joseph the righteous was the unity of the soul, and the tribes were the unity of the body.

Joseph represents the spiritual dimension, while the tribes represent the physical-national structure.

And when they became rectified, Judah approached him, and they became a single unity.

The meeting of Judah and Joseph symbolizes the harmonizing of body and soul within Israel.

And this is what he hinted to them by “binding sheaves,” that all forms of service are to bind and unite.

The vision of sheaves represents the unification of diverse actions toward one divine purpose.

But “my sheaf arose, and your sheaves encircled,” meaning the body encircling itself to unite with the soul.

Joseph’s rising sheaf symbolizes the soul leading, and the other sheaves—bodily or worldly aspects—aligning with it.

And so too on Shabbat, which is the unity of the soul.

Shabbat reveals the world’s inner spiritual core.

And the weekdays must nullify themselves and unite with Shabbat, which is the day of souls.

The weekday‑world aligns with Shabbat’s inner light, just as body aligns with soul.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that all existence moves toward unity—body with soul, Oral Torah with Written Torah, tribes with Joseph, weekdays with Shabbat. The ultimate aim is revealing divine oneness in every layer of life.
