Hidden Light of Shabbos
In the Midrash: “And He blessed the seventh day” — He blessed it with lights; the radiance of a human face is unlike any other.
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash that Shabbat is blessed with unique spiritual illumination, reflected in the brightness of a person’s face.
As it is written: “A person’s wisdom makes his face shine,” and this is the radiance of the soul.
The shining of the face reveals the inner light of the soul, especially manifest on Shabbat.
But the body conceals this light, and the strength of his countenance changes during the weekdays.
During the workweek, physicality dims the soul’s natural brightness.
As it is written: “In the beginning God created… and the earth was chaos and void.”
The primordial confusion of the earth parallels the obscuring effect the body has on the soul.
But in the heavens no change occurred.
The heavenly realm remains pure and unaltered, unlike the earthly realm.
And likewise, a person contains a soul from the heavens; the numerical value of “soul” equals “heavens.”
The soul is inherently celestial and shares its purity and constancy.
Only in the body was impurity mixed in.
The body introduces coarseness that obscures the soul’s light.
But for Israel, through the Torah — which is from the heavens — even the earth is repaired for them, and chaos and void are removed.
By engaging with Torah, the earthly aspect of a person becomes refined and uplifted.
As it is said: “Let there be light,” and it is written: “Torah is light.”
The Torah is the light that dispels spiritual darkness.
And on Shabbat the light of the Torah is revealed, and this is the meaning of reading the Torah on Shabbat.
Shabbat reveals the deeper illumination of Torah, and public Torah reading manifests this.
It is taught that God hid the primordial light for the righteous in the future, and Shabbat is the aspect of “tzaddik” in time — a taste of the World to Come — and it contains that hidden light.
Shabbat provides access to the concealed spiritual radiance destined for the righteous.
Therefore there is Havdalah on Saturday night, as it is written: “And He separated between the light…”
Havdalah marks the departure of Shabbat’s special light.
And Shabbat contains the fragrance of Eden, as it is written: “And He placed him in the Garden of Eden.”
Shabbat restores a trace of Adam’s pre-sin spiritual state.
“And He set him there” — as the Midrash says regarding “and he has been there until this day,” but only in this formation.
The Midrash teaches that this elevated state persists in a limited form within Shabbat.
For before the sin, a person was entirely soul, and this garment was taken from him after the sin, as it is written: “And He sent him out,” meaning this garment was removed.
Humanity originally possessed a spiritual “garment” of pure soul-light, lost at the expulsion from Eden.
And the strength of his face changes; but on Shabbat there is an extra soul and a radiance from that garment.
Shabbat temporarily restores some of the lost spiritual brilliance.
Therefore spices are used at Havdalah, for the fragrance of Eden departs with the extra soul.
The sweet smell comforts the soul when the Shabbat-Eden fragrance withdraws.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Shabbat reveals the hidden primordial light, restoring a glimpse of the soul’s original radiance. Torah refines the earthly aspect of humanity, and Shabbat renews the spiritual garment lost after the sin, whose departure we mark with Havdalah.
