Body and soul: weekday lamp and Shabbos light
Menorah · neshamah · Shabbos · neshamah yeseirah · body and soul
The parsha of the Menorah is placed next to what was written in the previous parsha, "And when Moshe came… it spoke to him."
The Sefas Emes notes the juxtaposition: the lighting of the Menorah follows directly upon Moshe receiving the Divine word in the Mishkan, hinting at a deeper link between the two.
For these two are the aspects of "Torah is light" and "a mitzvah is a lamp," for Moshe Rabbeinu is the aspect of "Torah is light."
Moshe represents the Torah itself — the pure, supernal light — while the Menorah, kindled by the people, represents the mitzvah that serves as a lamp to hold that light.
But those below need to prepare a lamp and a vessel to receive the light of Torah, and this is the aspect of refining the body through its 248 limbs.
Ordinary people cannot grasp the Torah's light directly; they must first refine their physical body, making it a fit vessel through performing the mitzvos with all their limbs.
For it is written, "a mitzvah is a lamp," and it is written, "the lamp of Hashem is the soul of man" — for the body is a vessel for the neshamah, and the neshamah illuminates the body.
Two verses about a "lamp" describe the relationship: the body holds the soul like a lamp holds oil, and the soul shines its light through the body.
For such is the form of man, that one cannot grasp the essence of the neshamah itself, but only through the powers that spread out from the neshamah into the 248 limbs.
The soul's essence is hidden; we perceive it only through the faculties it extends into the body and its actions.
And when a person binds and subordinates the body to the neshamah, he receives light from it, and this is "a mitzvah is a lamp."
By making the body serve the soul through mitzvos, a person draws the soul's light into his physical life — this is the avodah of the weekday.
But in truth the entire neshamah is "the lamp of Hashem," for it is the vessel upon which His Godliness rests; and these two refinements correspond to the weekdays and Shabbos.
There are two levels: in one, the body is the vessel for the soul (the weekday); in the higher one, the soul itself is the vessel for Hashem's light (Shabbos).
For it is brought in the Gemara on "Bless Hashem, O my soul," that the neshamah resembles the Holy One: just as the Holy One sustains the world, so the neshamah sustains the body.
The soul mirrors Hashem — as Hashem nourishes the entire world, the soul nourishes and gives life to the body.
And just as the Holy One watches over and gives life to the entire world constantly, so the neshamah must watch over and guide the body.
The soul's task is to constantly oversee and direct the body, just as Hashem's hashgachah (providence) governs all of creation.
And through the performance of the mitzvos and all the labors of the weekdays — which are powers composed of both soul and body — through this the body cleaves to the neshamah.
Weekday actions combine soul and body, and in doing them properly the physical body becomes attached and devoted to the soul.
But on Shabbos Kodesh, just as the Holy One inscribed rest for Himself on Shabbos Kodesh.
Shabbos is the day Hashem set aside as a time of rest, modeling a different mode of being than the working week.
So too the souls of Bnei Yisrael have rest on Shabbos.
On Shabbos the neshamah is freed from the labor of refining the body and enters a state of rest.
Therefore the labors are forbidden on Shabbos Kodesh, for then the neshamah itself receives the light of Godliness — and this is the meaning of the neshamah yeseirah (additional soul) on Shabbos Kodesh.
Since weekday work serves to elevate the body, it is set aside on Shabbos, when the soul itself directly receives Divine light — the experience of the extra Shabbos soul.
And the light that the neshamah receives on Shabbos Kodesh gives it the strength, in the weekdays that follow, to illuminate and guide the body.
Shabbos charges the soul with light, which then empowers it to lead the body throughout the coming week.
Therefore Shabbos is "the day of souls," for on it the neshamah receives light and vitality.
Shabbos belongs to the soul itself, which on that day is replenished with light and life.
And this is the aspect of Moshe Rabbeinu, the clear, illuminating lens (aspaklaria ha'me'irah).
Shabbos corresponds to Moshe's level of prophecy — a clear, unobstructed vision of the Divine light, without any veil.
Therefore on Shabbos one should make it entirely Torah.
Because Shabbos is the day of pure light, it is wholly devoted to Torah — "Torah is light" in its undimmed form.
And it is a taste of "the day that is entirely Shabbos," for in the future the body will be fully refined and the neshamah will receive new light constantly — as Bnei Yisrael were prepared to be at the receiving of the Torah, "you are godly beings and children of the Most High."
Shabbos foreshadows the future world, when the body will be perfected and the soul will continuously receive fresh light — the very state Bnei Yisrael reached at Matan Torah, before the sin.
But after the sin, the body requires refinement by means of the neshamah during the weekdays, through weekday activities, by means of "a mitzvah is a lamp."
Because of the sin, the body is no longer automatically pure; it must now be refined through the labor of mitzvos in everyday life.
And this is the aspect of the lens that does not illuminate (aspaklaria she'einah me'irah).
The weekday avodah is like the dimmer, indirect vision of prophecy — the light is real but seen only through a veil.
And this is the parable they gave in the Midrash, that one can only see through the black part of the eye.
Just as vision comes specifically through the dark pupil, spiritual light in this world is perceived only through the "darkness" of physical, concealed reality.
Therefore regarding the weekdays it always says, "and it was evening and it was morning," for the light cannot be revealed except out of the darkness.
The recurring "evening then morning" of the days of creation teaches that during the week, light emerges only by first passing through darkness.
But regarding Shabbos it does not say "and it was evening," for it is the aspect of the light of Torah, the light of the neshamah, which receives light without the garment of the body and of nature.
Shabbos has no "evening" because its light needs no darkness to emerge — the soul receives Divine light directly, unclothed by physicality.
This is the meaning of "and He blew into his nostrils the breath of life (nishmas chayim)."
The soul Hashem breathed into man is a "breath of life" — a direct, living connection to its Source.
"Chayim (life)" is like "mayim chayim (living water)," which is always connected to the source of the spring.
The soul is "living" in the sense of flowing water, never cut off from its wellspring in Hashem.
"And man became a living being" — this is the vitality that the neshamah draws down into the body.
Man becomes a "living being" when the soul channels its life-force from its Source into the physical body.
Summary: There are two modes of avodah, paralleled in the Menorah and the prophecy of Moshe. During the week — "a mitzvah is a lamp" — a person refines his body through the mitzvos, making it a vessel for the soul, with light emerging only out of darkness (the dim lens). On Shabbos — "Torah is light," Moshe's clear lens — the soul itself rests from refining the body and receives Divine light directly and unveiled (the neshamah yeseirah), a foretaste of the future world. The soul, "the breath of life," is like living water ever bound to its Source, drawing that vitality down into the body.
