The soul as the lamp of Hashem and Shabbos
Menorah · neshamah · mitzvos · Shabbos · neshamah yeseirah · soul and body
In the Midrash: "If you guard My lamp, I will guard your lamp" — "a mitzvah is a lamp" (Mishlei 6:23) and "the lamp of Hashem is the soul of man" (Mishlei 20:27).
The Midrash sets up a reciprocal arrangement: man guards Hashem's "lamp" (the mitzvos of the Menorah) and Hashem guards man's "lamp" (his neshamah).
The explanation: the mitzvos refine the limbs to be vessels through which the power of the soul can be drawn, as it says, "which a person shall do and live by them" (Vayikra 18:5) — for the essential vitality is from the soul, as it says, "and He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life" (Bereishis 2:7).
Each mitzvah prepares the bodily limbs to become fitting vessels that can hold and channel the neshamah's life-force; true life comes from the soul that Hashem breathed into man.
And the soul was sent into the world to give light to the body.
The neshamah's mission (shlichus) is to illuminate the physical body and elevate it.
And when the soul fulfills its mission and refines the body, then the soul is "the lamp of Hashem," and it is a vessel to receive vitality and Godliness (elokus).
When the neshamah accomplishes its shlichus of refining the body, it becomes "the lamp of Hashem," a vessel fit to receive Divine life and holiness.
And as written above, that these two are the aspects of the weekdays and the day of Shabbos — "the day of souls" (yoma d'nishmatin) — on which the soul receives an added light.
The body's refinement belongs to the weekdays, while Shabbos is the "day of souls," when the neshamah receives extra illumination.
And this is the additional soul (neshamah yeseirah); therefore Shabbos was given only to Bnei Yisrael, who possess a [special] soul.
This added Shabbos light is the neshamah yeseirah, and Shabbos belongs only to Bnei Yisrael, who alone have the kind of soul capable of receiving it.
And in the Midrash: "He builds His upper chambers in the heavens, and founds His bundle (agudaso) upon the earth" (Amos 9:6) — a parable of ships tied together...
The Midrash likens heaven and earth to ships bound together, illustrating the connection between the upper and lower realms.
This bond (kesher) is in every individual of Yisrael.
Each Jew personally embodies this binding-together of heaven and earth within himself.
The soul is the aspect of heaven.
Within a person, the neshamah corresponds to the heavenly dimension.
"Neshamah" has the numerical value of "ha-shamayim" (the heavens).
The gematria of "neshamah" equals that of "the heavens," confirming that the soul is man's heavenly portion.
And the body is the earthly portion; and it is written, "[In] six [days] Hashem made the heavens and the earth" (Shemos 20:11) — so it implies that Shabbos is the aspect of the heavens, "the day of souls," and therefore no other nation has a portion in Shabbos.
If the six days correspond to making heaven and earth, then Shabbos — beyond them — is the dimension of "heaven," the day of souls; and since only Bnei Yisrael have the heavenly neshamah, only they have a share in Shabbos.
And about this we say [in our berachah] "that He did not make us like the nations of the lands" — who are called thus ["nations of the lands"] because they have no portion in heaven and in the soul.
The nations are called "nations of the lands" precisely because their portion is only in the earthly realm, lacking the heavenly neshamah — which is why we bless Hashem for having made us different.
Summary: Mitzvos refine the bodily limbs into vessels that can hold the soul's life-force, so that "if you guard My lamp" (the mitzvos), Hashem guards "your lamp" (the neshamah). The soul's mission is to illuminate the body; when it succeeds it becomes "the lamp of Hashem." Shabbos is the "day of souls," granting the neshamah yeseirah — extra light. Since "neshamah" equals "the heavens" in gematria, the soul is man's heavenly portion, and Shabbos itself is the heavenly dimension. Therefore only Bnei Yisrael, who possess this heavenly soul, have a share in Shabbos, while the nations of the lands are bound only to the earth.
