The mitzvah as a lamp revealing light

And in the Midrash: "My lamp (neri) is in your hand, and your lamp (nercha) is in My hand."

The Midrash presents a mutual exchange — Hashem entrusts His "lamp" to us, and we entrust ours to Him — which the piece unpacks.

The matter is that a lamp (ner) is a vessel (kli).

A lamp is essentially a container that holds and reveals light — the key to the whole image.

Therefore it is written, "a mitzvah is a lamp" (Mishlei 6:23), for through the mitzvah a place is found in this world where the supernal spiritual light can be revealed.

Each mitzvah is a "lamp" — a vessel that creates a place in the physical world where the higher, spiritual light of Hashem can shine through.

For HaKadosh Baruch Hu wished to grant merit to Bnei Yisrael.

Hashem's intention was to give Bnei Yisrael the privilege of revealing His light themselves.

As is written, "in order to elevate you."

The whole arrangement is meant to elevate Bnei Yisrael through their own avodah.

For behold, HaKadosh Baruch Hu is capable of creating this world with revealed holiness (kedushah niglis).

Hashem could easily have made a world in which holiness was openly visible.

Like the upper worlds.

He could have made this world like the higher worlds, where holiness is plainly manifest.

But He made this lowly world to be in physicality (gashmiyus).

Instead, Hashem deliberately made this lower world material and physical.

And the holiness would not be revealed.

In such a physical world, holiness remains hidden and not openly revealed.

Only according to the rectification (tikkun) of Bnei Yisrael in the performance of the mitzvos.

Holiness is revealed in this world only to the extent that Bnei Yisrael draw it out through doing mitzvos.

Thus a place is found for the revelation of the holiness.

Through the mitzvos, Bnei Yisrael create the "place" — the vessel — in which holiness can appear.

And this is "My lamp is in your hand."

Hashem's light depends on us — we hold the "lamp" through which His holiness is revealed in the world.

And likewise, "your lamp is in My hand."

The reverse is equally true — our lamp is held by Hashem.

For a place is given to Bnei Yisrael in the upper worlds.

Just as we give Hashem a "place" below, He gives Bnei Yisrael a place in the spiritual worlds above.

Even though there is no physicality above.

The upper worlds are entirely spiritual, with nothing physical in them.

Nevertheless, Hashem yisborach brings into being a place where the souls (nefashos) of Bnei Yisrael can ascend in the spiritual world.

Hashem makes room in the purely spiritual realm for the souls of Bnei Yisrael to rise and be received.

According to their avodah in this world to bind the spiritual to the physical.

This ascent of the soul is granted in measure with how much a person worked to join the spiritual to the physical here below.

So they merit to elevate the physical, to be bound above in the spiritual.

In return, they are able to raise even physical things upward and connect them to the spiritual realm.

And this is "your lamp is in My hand."

Our "lamp" — our soul and our spiritual standing — is held and elevated by Hashem above.

"If you guard My lamp..." [then I will guard yours].

The exchange is conditional and reciprocal — if we guard Hashem's lamp by doing mitzvos, He guards ours.

And of this nature is the ascent of Shabbos Kodesh, according to the avodah during the weekdays (yemei hama'aseh) to bring the illumination of the neshamah into the action of the body (guf).

The elevation a person experiences on Shabbos corresponds to how much, during the week, he infused his bodily deeds with the light of his neshamah.

For there is an ascent even for the physical (gashmiyus) on Shabbos Kodesh, to cling to the spiritual.

On Shabbos, even the physical is elevated and able to attach itself to the spiritual.

For Shabbos is a semblance (mei'ein) of the World to Come (olam haba).

Shabbos is a foretaste of olam haba, when the physical itself will be raised and bound to the spiritual.

Summary: A mitzvah is a "lamp," a vessel that creates a place in this physical world where Hashem's hidden spiritual light can be revealed — "My lamp is in your hand." Hashem deliberately made this world material so that holiness would shine only through the avodah of Bnei Yisrael; and in return He makes a place above for their souls to ascend — "your lamp is in My hand." The more one binds the spiritual to the physical during the week, the greater the elevation of Shabbos, which is a foretaste of olam haba.
