Two oils: pure holiness and refined through toil
Menorah · Olive oil · Birur · Shabbos light · Galus suffering
In the Midrash: "A leafy olive tree…" (Yirmiyah 11:16).
The Sefas Emes opens with the navi's image of Yisrael as an olive tree, the source of the oil for the Menorah.
Like one who [observes] that in the olive there are two kinds of oil.
The olive yields oil in two ways, and this duality is the key to the whole teaching.
The pure (zach) [oil], and the oil that comes out by grinding.
One oil flows clear and effortless; the other must be forced out by crushing and grinding the olive.
So too there are in Bnei Yisrael two kinds of oil.
Within each Jew, likewise, there are two "oils" — two modes of revealing his inner holiness.
And it is taught of the "zayis aguri" (the gathered olive), whose oil is stored up within it.
One type of olive holds its oil ready within, corresponding to the holiness already gathered and present inside.
And of this type there is [the oil] from the side of the totality (klal) of Bnei Yisrael.
This ready, "stored-up" oil corresponds to the holiness that flows from being part of Klal Yisrael as a whole.
And [also in] each individual.
This same duality exists not only in the nation collectively but within every single Jew.
For inasmuch as he is part of the klal of Bnei Yisrael, there is found in him pure (zach) oil.
By virtue of belonging to Klal Yisrael, a person already possesses ready "pure oil" — holiness that needs no extraction.
But individually, each one must toil to bring forth from potential into actuality that oil which is mixed within waste (pesoles).
On the private, individual level, however, a person's holiness lies mixed with "dross," and he must labor to extract it — drawing it from potential into deed.
And it requires much exertion to refine it so that it can be drawn after the wick.
Great effort is needed to purify this oil until it can "follow the wick" — that is, until it can sustain a steady flame of avodah.
For within a person there are the aspects of deed (ma'aseh), speech (dibur), and thought (machshavah).
The Sefas Emes maps a person onto three faculties: action, speech, and thought.
And in all of these the "lamp" (ner) is set in order.
The kindling of the inner lamp involves all three — deed, speech, and thought working together.
For the oil is the aspect of thought (machshavah).
The oil represents machshavah — the pure inner intention that fuels the flame.
And [it operates] within the deed of the mitzvah.
The "oil" of thought is poured into the physical act of the mitzvah, which is the deed-dimension.
When the pure thought is drawn into the deed, the Torah rests upon it through the power of speech (dibur).
When pure machshavah is infused into the mitzvah act, and speech (Torah/tefillah) joins them, the deed becomes illuminated by Torah — all three faculties unite to light the lamp.
And we have already written elsewhere that the generation of Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, was the aspect of "from the topmost ripe berry at the head of the olive tree."
The dor de'ah, Moshe's generation, was like the choicest oil from the highest, purest olives — a level of ready, effortless holiness.
And it illuminates all the generations, as it says, "to kindle a perpetual lamp" (ner tamid).
That supreme light of Moshe's generation is not for itself alone; it shines down as a "ner tamid," an everlasting flame, into every later generation.
But there is something of this nature in every generation.
A spark of that pristine light is accessible in every generation as well.
And even in each and every individual.
Indeed, every single person carries within him a measure of this pure, ready oil.
For there are times in which pure thoughts are found within him.
At certain moments a person is granted clear, pure machshavos — flashes of the "pure oil" within.
And at the moment of finding this pure thought…
When such a moment of pure thought arrives, it must be seized.
one must cling to it, so that it may illuminate other times [as well].
One should grasp and hold onto that pure thought, letting its light carry over and illuminate the less inspired times too.
To refine, by the power of this [pure] thought, also the thoughts that are not yet refined.
The clear moment becomes a tool of birur — using its purity to clarify and elevate the murkier, unrefined thoughts.
And this is the meaning of "And they shall take to you… pure [oil]… to kindle a perpetual lamp" (Shemos 27:20).
The pasuk commands taking the "pure oil" — the moments of pure machshavah — and using them to maintain a constant inner flame.
And on Shabbos Kodesh there is a revelation of the pure oil in every Jew.
Shabbos uncovers this "pure oil" in each Jew automatically — a gift of the day itself.
For Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, shines upon Bnei Yisrael every single Shabbos, as is written in the sefarim.
The pristine light of Moshe's generation radiates into Bnei Yisrael each Shabbos, making the pure oil available without toil.
Therefore on Shabbos Kodesh no refining (birur) is needed.
Because the pure oil is revealed directly on Shabbos, one need not labor to extract it through "grinding."
For it is the aspect of "pure" (zach).
Shabbos itself is the "zach" dimension — clear, effortless holiness.
"Waters of rest/tranquility" (Tehillim 23:2).
Shabbos is like the "still waters" of menuchah, where holiness flows calmly and clearly, requiring no struggle.
But on the weekdays one must extract the oil that is mixed within the waste.
During the workweek, by contrast, the holiness lies mixed with dross and must be laboriously drawn out — the "grinding" oil.
And so too in the generations, in the time of galus.
The same pattern operates across history: galus is the "weekday" of the generations, when holiness must be extracted through hardship.
And all the sufferings that pass over Bnei Yisrael are [there] to extract the aforementioned oil.
The afflictions of galus serve as the "grinding" — their purpose is to press out the hidden holy oil from within Bnei Yisrael.
As stated in the Midrash: the nations come… and surround [Yisrael]…
The Midrash describes the nations pressing in upon Yisrael — the very "grinding" that forces out the precious oil.
In any case, one must see to it that through the power of the sufferings, that oil is refined.
Whatever the hardship, the task is to ensure the suffering accomplishes its purpose — that it actually yields the refined holy oil rather than being endured in vain.
And this is what the navi rebuked them [with]: "A leafy olive tree… the Lord called your name" (Yirmiyah 11:16).
The navi's reproof invokes the olive precisely to remind Yisrael that their trials, like the crushing of the olive, are meant to produce oil.
That the sufferings and the galus should not, God forbid, be for nothing.
The warning is that the pain of galus not be wasted — that it not pass without bearing its intended fruit.
but rather, to find through them that oil, as above.
The whole point of the suffering is to discover and draw forth the hidden holy oil within — to let the "grinding" produce its precious light.
Summary: An olive yields two oils — pure oil that flows on its own, and oil forced out by crushing. So too every Jew: by belonging to Klal Yisrael he already holds "pure oil," but his individual holiness lies mixed with dross and must be extracted through toil, uniting pure thought, mitzvah-deed, and the speech of Torah to kindle the inner lamp. On Shabbos the pure oil is revealed effortlessly through Moshe Rabbeinu's light, needing no birur; on weekdays — and across the generations in galus — it must be pressed out. The navi's rebuke through the olive image teaches that the sufferings of galus must not be wasted, but used as the "grinding" that brings forth the precious holy oil.
