Mitzvos awaken an enduring inner flame
menorah · nekudah kedoshah · mitzvos · koach elyon · deveikus
And in Rashi: "to kindle a continual lamp" — that one must light it so that the flame rises of itself.
The Sefas Emes cites Rashi on the menorah: the kohen must kindle the lamp until the flame ascends on its own, without further assistance.
The explanation is that the fulfillment of the mitzvos is not by human power.
A mitzvah is not ultimately accomplished by human strength alone.
Rather, through the fulfillment of the mitzvah one arouses a higher power.
The human act of doing the mitzvah serves to awaken a koach elyon (supernal force) from Above that completes it.
And so it is in all of a person's avodah.
This pattern holds for every aspect of a person's service of Hashem, not only the menorah.
For the Holy One, blessed is He, placed within the soul of every Jew a holy point.
Every Jew carries an implanted nekudah kedoshah (holy inner point) within his soul.
And through the toil and the avodah, "like finds its like," and the inner power is roused and awakened.
When a person exerts himself in mitzvos, his effort meets that holy point — "like finds its like" — and the inner force flares to life.
And this is the meaning of "so that the flame rises of itself."
This is the deeper sense of the flame ascending on its own: once the inner point is kindled, it burns by its own supernal power.
And through this it becomes something enduring.
Because the flame now draws on a higher source, the result is lasting and permanent.
For that which is done by human power alone has an end.
Anything accomplished by mere human strength is finite and eventually gives out.
But when the power of the Holy One, blessed is He, is aroused, it endures forever.
Once the Divine power is awakened, what it sustains lasts eternally.
And this is the meaning of "he shall arrange it…"
The verse's word "arrange" hints at the person's role in the process.
That the essence of the avodah is to arrange things, to set them in their proper place, until they have a connection to their source, as above.
Man's task is to "arrange" — to put each thing in its rightful place so that it becomes attached (deveikus) to its supernal root.
And through this, "to kindle a continual lamp" — for through the ascent up to the root, as above, it endures forever, as stated.
By raising the flame all the way to its source, the lamp becomes "continual" — truly eternal, sustained by the Divine power it has reawakened.
Summary: The menorah must be lit so the flame "rises of itself," teaching that mitzvos are not completed by human strength alone. Each Jew has a holy inner point; through toil in avodah his effort meets that point — "like finds its like" — and rouses a supernal power that burns on its own. Whatever is done by mere human force ends, but what awakens the Divine power endures forever. Man's role is to arrange each thing in its place so it reconnects to its source, making the flame truly continual.
