Living mitzvos that cleave to their source
mitzvos · separateness · Torah as life · living waters · attachment
In the Midrash on "Like the practice of the land of Egypt etc." — a negative commandment — this is what the verse means: "Like a rose among the thorns etc."
The Torah's warning not to follow the ways of Egypt is linked to the image of Bnei Yisrael as a rose set apart among thorns — a flower that keeps its beauty even when surrounded by what would choke it.
Just as Bnei Yisrael are set apart below from all the nations, so too above there is a special governance for Bnei Yisrael.
Their separateness in this world mirrors a higher reality: Hashem leads Bnei Yisrael through a unique conduct that is unlike the way He governs the other nations.
For every nation has a heavenly minister (sar), but the governance of Bnei Yisrael is above all the ministers.
The nations are channeled through their angelic "ministers," intermediaries through which their portion flows; Bnei Yisrael, however, are bound directly to Hashem, above all such intermediaries.
Therefore Hashem commanded Bnei Yisrael to be set apart from all the nations; and according to the separation below — that they do not mix with them or with their statutes, "like a rose among the thorns" — so too above they are "like an apple tree among the trees of the forest etc."
The degree to which we hold ourselves apart from the practices of the nations below determines how distinguished and beloved we are above — like a fruit-bearing apple tree standing out among barren forest trees.
Therefore it concludes: "In His shade I delighted" — to be set apart from them.
Choosing to dwell in the "shade" of Hashem rather than in the ways of the nations is itself the source of delight — the closeness gained precisely through being separate.
And this is what the Midrash hinted with "like the work of the sapphire brick" — that when Bnei Yisrael were below in galus, there was a corresponding impression above as well.
Even in the depths of the Egyptian galus, the suffering of Bnei Yisrael left its mark on high, as if a sapphire brick lay before Hashem's throne — their lowly state below was registered and felt in the upper worlds.
"Which a person shall do and live by them."
The purpose of the mitzvos is not merely performance but life — they are meant to draw a person into living vitality through them.
The meaning: this itself is the command upon Bnei Yisrael — to strive to cling to the path of life, as it is written: "I have set before you life and death etc., and you shall choose life."
"And live by them" is itself a mitzvah: to actively bind oneself to the way of life that the Torah opens, choosing connection to its inner vitality.
And so it is brought in the Gemara (Shabbos 88): for those who go to the right with it (the Torah), it is an elixir of life etc.
The same Torah is a "drug of life" for those who approach it properly — its life-giving power depends on how a person draws near to it.
For all the governances of all the heavenly ministers are drawn down through the power of the Torah.
Even the way the nations are led through their ministers ultimately derives its force from the Torah — the Torah is the root through which all governance flows into the world.
And before the corruption of the wicked there was only one language, and through the sins they were split into seventy tongues.
The original unity of mankind — one language rooted in the one source — fractured through sin into the seventy nations and their separate tongues and ministers.
And Bnei Yisrael were chosen to cling to the Eitz Hachaim (Tree of Life).
Out of that fragmentation, Bnei Yisrael were singled out to remain attached to the unified source of life, the Torah itself.
And according to their preparation, so is the path of life revealed.
How much of this life is revealed depends on a person's own readiness — the inner preparation he brings determines how much vitality flows to him.
Therefore: "And you shall keep etc. My ordinances, which a person shall do and live by them" — and not that he should die by them.
The Torah stresses living by the mitzvos, not dying by them — the goal is a vitality that endures, not an act that is lifeless or fleeting.
And the discerning one will understand these matters more deeply.
The Sefas Emes hints that there is a still deeper layer here, left for the thoughtful reader to grasp.
A further explanation of "and live by them, and not die by them": a person must perform the mitzvah such that he cleaves entirely to the light of the mitzvah, so that the impression (reshimu) of the mitzvah remains fixed within him.
A mitzvah done with full bittul (self-nullification) into its inner light leaves a permanent imprint on the person — the connection it forges stays with him rather than fading.
"Living" — it is like living waters (mayim chaim).
Such a mitzvah is "alive" in the way of a flowing spring rather than a stagnant pool.
For it remains attached to its source and never ceases.
Like a stream still joined to its wellspring, a mitzvah performed with attachment to Hashem stays connected to its Divine source and never runs dry.
"And not die by them" — for one who acts with coldness, and it is only for the moment and afterward is cut off from him, this is called death.
A mitzvah done coldly, without inner engagement, makes no lasting bond — it is severed once the moment passes, and such a disconnected act is a kind of "death."
And this is what Rashi means by "to walk in them" — make them the main thing, as above.
"To walk in them" means to make the mitzvos one's very essence and the center of one's life, so that the connection they create becomes permanent and living.
Summary: Bnei Yisrael are set apart from the nations both below and above, bound directly to Hashem through the Torah, the Tree of Life. The command "and live by them" teaches that a mitzvah must be done with full attachment to its inner light, leaving a permanent living imprint — like flowing spring waters joined to their source — rather than a cold, fleeting act that is "death."
