Joseph’s Spiritual Influence in Egypt

“In the verse: ‘And Joseph harnessed his chariot.’”

The Sefat Emet opens by focusing on Joseph’s personal act of preparing his own chariot, which the sages understand as spiritually significant.

“And our sages said: Let this ‘binding’ come and stand against the ‘binding’ of Pharaoh, as it is written: ‘And he harnessed his chariot.’”

The Midrash contrasts Joseph’s harnessing with Pharaoh’s, implying that Joseph’s act counteracts and even subdues Pharaoh’s power.

“As it is written: ‘To bind his princes at his will.’”

This verse shows that Joseph was endowed with spiritual authority enabling him to restrain and direct the powers of Egypt.

“For the ministering prince of Egypt is above the princes of the other nations.”

Egypt’s spiritual force is considered the strongest among the nations, making its domination especially potent.

“Therefore the first exile was in Egypt.”

Because Egypt’s spiritual power is so great, the foundational exile of Israel needed to confront and refine that power.

“But Joseph, through his own power, rose above all the princes.”

Joseph’s righteousness allowed him to transcend and dominate even the powerful spiritual forces governing Egypt.

“And this is what is meant by: ‘God has made me lord over all Egypt,’ by which he comforted his father, for he had prepared help for them regarding the Egyptian bondage.”

Joseph reassures Jacob that his position provides spiritual protection for Israel during the coming exile.

“And it appears that if they had not later sinned regarding Joseph’s covenant...”

The Sefat Emet suggests that Israel’s later failures undermined the protection Joseph had secured for them.

“There would not have been any harshness in the bondage in Egypt.”

The exile could have been gentle, had Israel remained faithful to the spiritual legacy of Joseph.

“As it is written: ‘A new king arose who did not know Joseph,’ meaning they violated the covenant of circumcision, as the Midrash states.”

The forgetting of Joseph is interpreted as Israel abandoning key covenantal practices, thus removing their spiritual shield.

“And even on the simple level, it appears from ‘to bind his princes… and make his elders wise,’ that Joseph taught them wisdom, and they all submitted to him and became righteous among the nations.”

Joseph uplifted Egypt intellectually and morally, bringing many of its leaders toward righteousness.

“But afterward a new king arose; therefore it is written: ‘For they acted willfully against them.’”

A new regime willfully rejected Joseph’s influence and turned against Israel.

“They understood the power of the Children of Israel, but rebelled against them with malice.”

The Egyptians recognized Israel’s spiritual strength, yet chose to oppose and suppress it intentionally.

“Therefore they were later destroyed; and had Israel not sinned afterward, the bondage would have been easy, through the preparation made by Joseph.”

Egypt’s fall was a consequence of its aggression, and Israel’s suffering was intensified only because they forfeited Joseph’s protective merit.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Joseph’s spiritual greatness subdued Egypt’s powerful forces and prepared a gentle exile for Israel. Only through later sins did Israel lose this protection, allowing Egypt to turn against them and intensify the bondage.
