Unity of Heart and Mind
Prayer · Redemption · Shabbat · Soul · Tefillin
“In the Midrash: ‘One with one they shall approach.’”
The Sefat Emet opens by citing the Midrash, which hints at the unification of two forces within the person.
“And in the Zohar: ‘And Judah approached him’—this refers to the joining of redemption to prayer.”
The Zohar reads Judah’s approach as symbolizing the spiritual principle that prayer must follow redemption.
“For the essence of a person’s service is in the heart and in the mind.”
The Sefat Emet frames human avodah as the harmonizing of emotion and intellect.
“Prayer is in the heart.”
Prayer expresses the inner emotional life of the soul.
“‘To serve Him with all your heart’—what is the service of the heart? This is prayer.”
The Sefat Emet grounds his teaching in the classic rabbinic interpretation.
“For there are two hearts: a wise heart and a foolish heart.”
The heart contains both clarity and confusion, yearning and misdirection.
“Therefore one must work upon the heart, for the heart in the soul is like a king in battle—and this is the service of the weekdays.”
Weekday service involves contending with inner conflict.
“And through this it is written: ‘The heart knows its own bitterness.’”
Only by engaging the struggle does a person come to recognize inner bitterness.
“And one must work to sweeten this bitterness.”
The goal of avodah is transformation, not suppression.
“As the Zohar explains: ‘Those who know the teru‘ah’—they break the teru‘ah.”
The knowledgeable can transform the cry of brokenness into uplift.
“And this was the aspect of Judah within Israel.”
Judah represents the heart engaged in struggle.
“A king in battle—the aspect of the heart.”
Judah is the battling king, the dynamic heart.
“And Joseph is the aspect of the mind, the aspect of redemption.”
Joseph represents clarity and illumination.
“For the essence of redemption is in the soul.”
Redemption begins internally, through awakening of the mind.
“When the soul and the mind shine upon a person, then the battle of the heart quiets and the heart becomes one.”
Illumination resolves inner duality.
“Thus it is written: ‘In his joy no stranger shall mix,’ for when one is filled with the soul’s joy, the foolish heart is nullified.”
Joy from the soul excludes all foreign or confused impulses.
“Therefore on Shabbat, when an extra soul illuminates a person, the Other Side flees.”
Shabbat brings clarity and dispels inner opposition.
“And Shabbat is a day of joy, as the Sages said: ‘Your days of joy—these are the Sabbaths,’ for the soul shines within a person.”
Shabbat joy comes from spiritual illumination.
“And prayer on Shabbat is the aspect of ‘A prayer of Moses.’”
It is prayer from clarity, not from struggle.
“For there is the prayer of the poor—weekday prayer.”
Weekday prayer arises from pain and yearning.
“Prayer born of bitterness and battle.”
This is Judah’s mode.
“And there is prayer from the soul’s longing to cleave to the Creator.”
This higher prayer emerges on Shabbat.
“And this prayer is without mixture, and no stranger intrudes.”
Perfect clarity allows no internal distortion.
“Therefore in every prayer one must join redemption to prayer.”
Even weekday prayer must be anchored in moments of inner clarity.
“And so we precede prayer with Psalms of Praise, the Shema, and the redemption from Egypt, to pray from joy—then the Other Side flees.”
The liturgy builds inner light that dispels confusion.
“Then the heart also becomes one.”
Unity is restored.
“And the main unity of heart and mind is on Shabbat, the day of freedom, rest, and soul-illumination.”
Shabbat is the consummation of inner harmony.
“Therefore ‘Remember’ and ‘Guard’ were said in one utterance.”
Mind and heart are unified in the divine word.
“‘Remember’ in the mind, ‘guard’ in the heart.”
Each corresponds to a different inner faculty.
“And this is ‘Judah approached him’—the joining of Judah with Joseph.”
The heart approaches the mind; struggle approaches clarity.
“Then it is written: ‘No man stood with him when Joseph made himself known.’”
When heart and mind unite, all externality falls away.
“As explained elsewhere.”
The Rebbe alludes to a broader teaching.
“Therefore in prayer one must be bound with the hand-tefillin and head-tefillin, which are the aspects of heart and mind.”
Tefillin embody this inner unification.
“As the Zohar says: through tefillin, the Other Side is subdued.”
Tefillin strengthen clarity and dispel confusion.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Judah (heart) and Joseph (mind) must unite. Weekday prayer arises from struggle, while Shabbat prayer arises from clarity. Through redemption-before-prayer, Shabbat illumination, and the symbolism of tefillin, the heart and mind become one, and the inner “stranger” disappears.
