Spiritual Garments and Transformation

“In the verse: ‘To all of them he gave each man changes of garments… and to Benjamin he gave… five changes of garments.’”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting the Torah’s emphasis on the distribution of garments, especially the five given to Benjamin.
“The matter is that the inner essence is always one, but the garment changes according to a person’s spiritual level, rising and falling, as it is said: ‘it sheds one form and takes on another.’”
Inner holiness is constant, but outward expression shifts based on one’s spiritual condition, like changing forms or garments.
“And certainly, the benefit that comes through exile is the repair of the garment.”
Exile refines the external layers of the soul, preparing it to receive higher holiness.
“Therefore, at the Exodus it is written that they took vessels of silver and gold, and garments—which, Rashi notes, were the most precious.”
Garments symbolize spiritual vessels; thus the Torah highlights them as the most beloved.
“And Joseph gave them the method by which they could be clothed in all these different garments, as Joseph demonstrated when they did not recognize him, though he stood in his righteousness.”
Joseph exemplified how one can remain inwardly righteous while externally clothed in entirely different appearances.
“And thus said our Sages: he hinted to Benjamin that Mordechai would descend from him, who went out from before the king in five garments.”
The five garments given to Benjamin allude to Mordechai’s five royal garments, symbolizing mastery of spiritual ‘garments’ in a time of concealment.
“For in the days of Esther the concealment of the Divine Face was greatest, and Mordechai repaired the five types of garments mentioned.”
In the spiritually darkest period, Mordechai elevated the external layers of holiness.
“And perhaps this is the hint for the custom of exchanging garments on Purim, for the custom of Israel is Torah.”
The Purim practice reflects the spiritual theme of transforming and elevating garments.
“And this is the matter of the changes of garments, as explained above.”
All these teachings illuminate the symbolism of changing garments.
“For all the wagons and the preparation for the descent to Egypt were arranged by Joseph, as explained elsewhere.”
Joseph guided the spiritual descent into exile, providing the proper ‘garments’ for the journey.
“And also from the words of my holy grandfather regarding the saying that Jacob was destined to descend, etc.”
The descent to Egypt was preordained, and Joseph prepared the spiritual means—symbolized by garments—to endure it.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that while inner holiness is constant, spiritual garments shift with one’s level. Joseph, master of garments, guided Israel in preparing their outer spiritual layers for exile, symbolized by the changes of garments and reflected later in Mordechai and the customs of Purim.
