Unity and Shabbos as vessels for holiness
Chazal said that this parsha was spoken b'hakhel (to the entire assembly gathered together).
The Sefas Emes notes the teaching that parshas Kedoshim was uttered to all of Bnei Yisrael assembled as one, rather than to scattered individuals.
The hint is that through unification within Klal Yisrael one merits kedushah (holiness), as it is written, "Hashem your God walks in the midst of your camp" (Devarim 23:15) — this is the camp of Yisrael which is set apart and separated from admixtures; then the Shechinah is among them.
Because the parsha of holiness was given to the unified assembly, it teaches that kedushah is attained specifically through the unity of Klal Yisrael. When the "camp" is set apart from foreign admixtures and joined as one, the Shechinah dwells within it.
And it is brought regarding the holy Shabbos that "it unifies in the secret of the One, and the sitra achra (the 'other side,' the force of impurity) flees."
The Zohar teaches that on Shabbos all becomes unified in the mystery of Hashem's Oneness, and the forces of impurity flee — paralleling the unity-through-which-holiness-comes of the assembled camp.
Therefore holiness is revealed on Shabbos Kodesh.
Since Shabbos is the time of this unification in the One, it is the day on which kedushah becomes manifest.
And one may say that "your camp" is Shabbos.
The Sefas Emes suggests that the "camp" in which Hashem walks alludes not only to the unified people but also to Shabbos itself.
For just as in the "camp" there is a gathering in the dimension of soul (nefesh) —
The camp represents a gathering and unification of souls — many people drawn together into one.
— so on Shabbos there is a gathering in the dimension of time.
Shabbos is the parallel in the realm of time: a gathering-in, where the scattered blessing of the week is drawn together into one unified day.
And in the Midrash: "to deliver you" (Devarim 23:15) — to shield you, to be a shade over your head; and so it is on the holy Shabbos, "He spreads the sukkah of His peace over us."
The Midrash explains that Hashem's walking in the camp serves "to deliver you" — to protect and shade you. The same protective shelter is invoked on Shabbos in the prayer that Hashem spread "the sukkah of His peace" over us.
And the opinion that "to deliver you" means to empty out the wealth of the nations for you — so it is on Shabbos, "and I will feed you the heritage of Yaakov" (Yeshayahu 58:14).
According to the second view, "to deliver you" means Hashem will pour the nations' wealth into your hands. This too has its Shabbos parallel: the promise that one who delights in Shabbos will be fed "the heritage of Yaakov" — abundant blessing.
And it is juxtaposed, "Each man shall fear his mother and his father, and you shall guard My Shabbosos" (Vayikra 19:3), to say that through this one merits kedushah.
The Torah places fear of parents next to the command to keep Shabbos, teaching that through both of these one attains holiness.
And it is brought that just as there is a father and mother for the body, so there is for the soul.
As the body has a father and mother who bring it into being, so the soul has its own "father and mother" — its spiritual sources.
And just as in the body, three are partners in it.
Chazal teach that three partners share in forming a person: the father, the mother, and Hashem.
Therefore one must fear father and mother.
Because father and mother are genuine partners with Hashem in one's creation, the Torah commands reverence for them.
And although even the act of father and mother is entirely by the power of the Creator, only that they are vessels through which the act is completed —
The Sefas Emes clarifies: the parents' role too derives wholly from Hashem's power; they are merely vessels through which His act of creating the child is brought to completion.
likewise Shabbos is a vessel by which to merit the neshamah, for it is the "day of souls," and through the neshamah that descends on the holy Shabbos one merits kedushah.
Just as parents are vessels for forming the body, Shabbos is the vessel for receiving the soul: it is "yoma d'nishmatin" (the day of souls), when the additional neshamah descends. Through that descending soul, one attains holiness — paralleling the partners who form a person.
"And you shall sanctify yourselves" (Vayikra 20:7) is during the weekdays, and "and you shall be holy" is on the holy Shabbos, when one becomes like a new being (havayah chadashah) through the power of the neshamah, as stated.
The two phrases mark two stages: during the week one labors to "sanctify oneself," and on Shabbos that effort culminates in "you shall be holy" — for the descending soul re-creates the person as a new being, infused with holiness.
Summary: Because parshas Kedoshim was spoken to the whole assembly, it teaches that holiness comes through the unity of Klal Yisrael — a unity mirrored on Shabbos, which "unifies in the secret of the One" and drives away the sitra achra. The "camp" in which Hashem walks alludes both to the gathered people (a unity of souls) and to Shabbos (a unity in time). Just as father, mother, and Hashem are three partners forming the body, with the parents serving as vessels of His power, so Shabbos is the vessel for the descending neshamah — the "day of souls" — through which one is re-created as a new being and rises from "sanctify yourselves" in the week to "you shall be holy" on Shabbos.
