Channels of holiness: space, time, soul
On the verse: "Every man shall fear his mother and his father, and you shall keep My Shabbosos" (Vayikra 19:3).
The verse joins the fear of one's parents together with the keeping of Shabbos, suggesting a common thread between them.
And in another verse it is written: "You shall keep My Shabbosos and revere My Mikdash" (Vayikra 19:30).
Here Shabbos is paired with the awe of the Bais Hamikdash. The two verses together link three things — parents, Shabbos, and the Mikdash — as objects of yirah (awe).
And presumably all these things that are written in this parsha are aids toward kedushah (holiness).
Since the parsha of Kedoshim is about becoming holy, every commandment listed in it — including honoring parents, Shabbos, and the Mikdash — serves as a means to draw down holiness.
For there are the dimensions of olam (space), shanah (time), and nefesh (soul).
The Sefas Emes invokes the classic threefold framework from Sefer Yetzirah: holiness can be drawn into the world through a sanctified place, a sanctified time, or a sanctified soul.
For there is a special place to merit holiness — namely Eretz Yisrael and the Bais Hamikdash — in the dimension of space.
In the realm of olam (space), the designated channel for kedushah is the holy Land and especially the Bais Hamikdash.
And there are special times for holiness — Shabbos and the mikra'ei kodesh (festivals).
In the realm of shanah (time), the channels for kedushah are Shabbos and the Yamim Tovim.
And there are special souls.
In the realm of nefesh (soul), certain people are themselves vessels of holiness.
And within the soul itself there is a special place — in the head, the place of the neshamah.
Even within a single person there is a "holy of holies": the head, seat of the neshamah, is the inner point where kedushah rests.
The general principle is: wherever there is a renewal of illumination from Above, it is called kedushah.
The defining mark of holiness, in any of these three dimensions, is a fresh influx of Divine light entering the world from Above.
Therefore our Chachamim of blessed memory expounded that a person should sanctify himself at the time of marital union, because through the birth of children a neshamah is drawn down, and that is a renewal from Above — therefore it is called kedushah.
Bringing a child into the world draws a brand-new soul into existence — a renewal of Divine illumination — which is precisely why this moment demands holiness and is itself an act of kedushah.
And likewise on the holy Shabbos, when the neshamah yeseirah (additional soul) descends.
Shabbos too brings a fresh Divine illumination — the extra soul — and is therefore holy.
And likewise in the Bais Hamikdash, when Bnei Yisrael ascended there, the illumination of the neshamah rested upon them.
Coming up to the Bais Hamikdash drew down a heightened soul-illumination upon those who came — again, a renewal of light from Above.
And in truth, one must fear the Mikdash and Shabbos just as one fears father and mother, for they too give the neshamah, as above.
This resolves why the verses pair these together: parents give a child his soul through birth, and Shabbos and the Mikdash likewise transmit soul-illumination — so all three rightly command our awe.
And Adam HaRishon was created from the place of the Bais Hamikdash, as our Chachamim said.
The very dust of the first man was taken from the site of the future Mikdash — underscoring that man and the Mikdash share one root as vessels for the indwelling of the neshamah.
Summary: Kedushah is defined as a renewal of Divine illumination from Above, and it enters this world through three channels — sanctified space (Eretz Yisrael and the Bais Hamikdash), sanctified time (Shabbos and Yamim Tovim), and sanctified souls. Because parents, Shabbos, and the Mikdash all serve as conduits for drawing down a neshamah, the Torah commands us to revere all three alike.
