Regarding the arrangement of the lechem hapanim (showbread): "On the day of Shabbos, on the day of Shabbos he shall arrange it… an eternal covenant" (Vayikra 24:8).

The Sefas Emes opens on the mitzvah of the showbread, which was set out anew each Shabbos and is called a "bris olam" — an everlasting covenant, hinting that something cosmic is bound up in this avodah.

It is brought in the Midrash (Tanchuma, Bechukosai):

He cites the source for the idea he is about to develop.

"For who in the heavens can be compared to Hashem…" (Tehillim 89:7) — that the upper worlds cannot "arrange" before Hashem as Bnei Yisrael do below; "who is like Hashem among the sons of the mighty" — these are Bnei Yisrael.

Even the angels above cannot serve Hashem the way Bnei Yisrael serve Him here in the physical world. The unique power lies specifically with Yisrael below.

As it is written: "To man belong the arrangements of the heart…" (Mishlei 16:1).

The human being's task is to prepare and "arrange" his heart; the readiness comes from below, from man's own effort.

And just as it is on the individual level — according to the preparation of the heart, so the power comes from Above —

The measure of siyata diShmaya (heavenly help) a person draws down corresponds exactly to the hachanah (preparation) he makes in his own heart.

so too on the collective level: Bnei Yisrael are called "Adam," as it is taught, "You [Yisrael] are called Adam."

What is true of the single person is true of Klal Yisrael as a whole. Yisrael bears the name "Adam," the complete human being who arranges his heart before Hashem.

Therefore Bnei Yisrael set out the arrangement below, and correspondingly the shefa (heavenly flow) descends from the heavens.

By laying out the showbread below, Bnei Yisrael draw down the abundance from above — the avodah of man awakens the response of Hashem.

In truth, when the Bais Hamikdash stood, all three powers were gathered together in the aspect of olam, shanah, nefesh (space, time, soul).

The Mikdash unified the three dimensions of creation — place (olam), time (shanah), and soul (nefesh) — into a single point of service to Hashem.

And Bnei Yisrael, in the Heichal on Shabbos kodesh, arranged each Shabbos a unique order.

The setting of the showbread was not a routine repetition; every single Shabbos had its own distinct arrangement of avodah.

For each and every Shabbos carries a different ascent, one higher than the next.

No two Shabbosos are the same. Each one lifts a person and the world to a higher rung than the one before.

And so it is forever; therefore it is written, "On the day of Shabbos, on the day of Shabbos he shall arrange it."

The doubled phrase "Shabbos, Shabbos" alludes to this continuous chain of ascents — one Shabbos always leading into the next.

For this arrangement joined the two Shabbosos: according to the arrangement of this Shabbos, so it was set up for the coming Shabbos — for the one who arranged the bread on this Shabbos would raise up the bazichin (incense-spoons) on the next Shabbos.

The showbread literally bridged consecutive Shabbosos: the loaves set out one week were taken up the next, so the avodah of this Shabbos prepares and feeds into the Shabbos to come.

And so it is forever.

This linkage is not a one-time event but a perpetual pattern that runs through all of time.

Therefore it is called an "eternal covenant."

Because each Shabbos is bound to the next in an unbroken chain, the showbread is fittingly named a bris olam.

For the entire world depends upon the avodah of Bnei Yisrael in the Mikdash.

The whole of creation is sustained through the service Bnei Yisrael perform in the Bais Hamikdash — their arrangement below is what draws all blessing into the world.

Summary: The weekly arranging of the lechem hapanim shows that Bnei Yisrael, called "Adam," draw down all heavenly shefa through their avodah below. Each Shabbos brings a higher ascent and is joined to the next, so the showbread — a "bris olam" — binds all of time into one continuous chain upon which the entire world depends.
