Bnei Yisrael as witnesses revealing Hashem
In the Midrash: "I considered my ways" (Tehillim 119:59) — David said: each day I would plan that I am going to such-and-such a place, yet my feet would bring me to the batei knesiyos and batei medrashos.
Dovid HaMelech describes how, despite intending to go elsewhere, his feet kept carrying him to shuls and study halls — his inner pull toward holiness overrode his plans.
This is the meaning of "and I returned my feet to Your testimonies" (Tehillim 119:59).
His feet "returned" of their own accord to Hashem's testimonies — to places of Torah and tefillah.
For it is written, "Hashem made everything for His sake" (Mishlei 16:4); Chazal expounded "le-ma'aneihu" as "le-eduso" — to bear witness about Him.
Everything in creation exists to testify to Hashem; the purpose of all things is to be a witness pointing back to their Creator.
And this testimony is the duty placed upon a Jew, as it is written, "You are My witnesses" (Yeshayahu 43:10).
It falls to every Jew to be the witness who finds and reveals the divine testimony hidden in the world.
Therefore a person must find this testimony in every thing and in every place.
The Jew's task is to uncover the witness-to-Hashem latent within everything he encounters.
And so Dovid HaMelech took pride in himself, that from all the thoughts that passed before him throughout the day he extracted from them the testimony of Hashem.
Dovid's greatness was that he sifted every passing thought and circumstance to draw out of it some testimony to Hashem.
And in the Gemara at the end of Berachos: which is a small passage upon which all the essentials of Torah depend? "In all your ways know Him" (Mishlei 3:6; Berachos 63a).
This single verse — to know Hashem in everything you do — is the foundation on which the whole Torah rests.
To find this testimony in all things.
"Knowing Him in all your ways" means discovering the testimony to Hashem within every detail of life.
And the matter of "to the batei knesiyos and batei medrashos."
The Sefas Emes now explains why Dovid's feet specifically led him to shuls and study halls.
For it is taught: "His greatness and His goodness fill the world."
Hashem's greatness and goodness permeate all of creation, leaving no place empty of Him.
"His greatness" is the aspect of the creation of the world through the ten utterances.
"Greatness" refers to the world brought into being by the asarah ma'amaros, the ten utterances of creation.
"His goodness" is the Torah, the Ten Commandments (Aseres HaDibros).
"Goodness" refers to the Torah, expressed through the Aseres HaDibros.
And they fill the world, for there is no place or thing in which there is not the power of the ten utterances and the Ten Commandments.
Both creation (the ten utterances) and Torah (the ten commandments) are woven into every place and object in the world.
And a Jew must clarify this and find the illumination of the Torah in every place.
The Jew's avodah is to uncover the light of Torah hidden within everything around him.
And all those things and thoughts that pass over a person — all of them are to clarify this testimony, and they are like the "examinations, inquiries, and interrogations" with which witnesses are cross-examined, and this is the clarification of the testimony.
Every experience and stray thought is, as it were, a "cross-examination" — an opportunity to test and verify the testimony to Hashem, refining the witness within.
And just as Shabbos is called "testimony" (sahaduso), so too all the matters of the six weekdays — the good in them is clarified, and they are elevated on Shabbos, and this is the testimony of Shabbos.
Shabbos itself bears witness; on it the good gleaned from all the week's activities is sifted out and raised up — the weekday is refined and elevated through Shabbos.
Likewise Bnei Yisrael are called witnesses, for through them good is separated from evil, and through a person the good is clarified and elevated upward out of this mixture; therefore it is written, "You are My witnesses."
Bnei Yisrael are the witnesses who separate good from evil in the world, lifting the good out of its admixture with evil — that is the deeper meaning of "You are My witnesses."
Summary: Everything in creation was made to bear testimony to Hashem, and the Jew's task — "in all your ways know Him" — is to find that testimony in every place and thing. Like a witness under cross-examination, a person sifts every experience and thought to extract the good and elevate it, just as Shabbos refines and raises the good of the whole week. This is why Bnei Yisrael are called Hashem's witnesses.
