"With ten utterances the world was created," etc. (Avos 5:1).
The Sefas Emes begins with the Mishnah that the world was created through ten divine utterances, and the Mishnah's question of why — when it could have been created with a single utterance.
And it is difficult either way: if it is now easier to serve Hashem, what good reward is there to give the tzaddikim? And the reverse is likewise difficult.
The Mishnah explains that the ten utterances serve "to give good reward to the tzaddikim who sustain the world." But this poses a dilemma: if ten utterances make avodah easier, why should the tzaddikim earn extra reward? And if the answer is that they make it harder, that too is hard to understand.
Rather, certainly each utterance has its own particular concealment (hester).
The resolution: each of the ten utterances introduced its own distinct layer of concealment, hiding the divine life-force within the created world in a unique way.
And the tzaddikim uphold the world that was created with ten utterances.
The tzaddikim are those who "sustain" this multilayered, concealed world — but the Sefas Emes will now redefine what that sustaining means.
Meaning, that they clarify and testify that the life-force of everything is from the ten utterances.
To "uphold" the world is to reveal and bear witness that, beneath all the concealments, the entire life-force of creation flows from those very divine utterances.
"Uphold" (mekayyemim) is like the "validation" of a document (kiyum shtar), which testifies to and confirms the matter.
The Sefas Emes plays on the word mekayyemim: just as a legal document is "validated" by witnesses who confirm its authenticity, the tzaddikim validate creation by confirming that its hidden source is Hashem's word.
And the meaning of "utterance" (maamar) is a drawing-down and an attachment to the root of the life-force, as it is written, "He has caused you to declare (he'emircha)... He made us one distinct entity," etc.
The word maamar (utterance) also connotes binding and drawing-near — as in the verse where the same root expresses Israel and Hashem "declaring" one another and becoming a single bonded unit. So the tzaddik's testimony that all life flows from the utterances is itself an act of drawing creation back to its root and binding it to Hashem.
Summary: The world was created with ten utterances, each adding its own layer of concealment over the divine life-force. The tzaddikim "uphold" this world not by making avodah easier or harder, but in the sense of validating a document — they bear witness and confirm that, despite all the concealments, the life-force of everything flows from Hashem's utterances. The very word "utterance" connotes drawing creation near and binding it back to its root in Hashem.
