Joseph as Inner Continuation
Jacob · Joseph · Chesed · Tzaddik · Creation
“These are the generations of Jacob.”
The Sefat Emet opens by explaining that the “generations” refer not only to biological descendants but to spiritual continuations of Jacob’s essence.
Just as the patriarchs are the pillars upon which the world stands, so too the tribes are patriarchs in their own right, implying that they have offspring similar to them.
The tribes inherit and transmit spiritual foundations just as the patriarchs do, though on a different level.
However, the spiritual level of the tribes is lower than that of the patriarchs; as it is said, “A son is the leg of his father,” meaning they are like the legs upon which the body stands.
The tribes function as extensions and supports of the patriarchs, enabling their spiritual mission to stand in the world.
And Joseph is singled out within these generations.
Joseph embodies the inner essence of Jacob’s lineage in a unique way.
He is the aspect of the mind of the son derived from the mind of the father, a more inward quality than that of a son as “the leg of his father.”
Joseph reflects Jacob’s inner consciousness, not merely his outward continuity.
It is written, “The house of Jacob who redeemed Abraham,” and this refers to Joseph, for Scripture attributes Jacob’s generations specifically to Joseph.
The Sefat Emet reads this verse as indicating Joseph’s role in revealing the inner redemptive power of the patriarchal line.
Just as it says, “These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created,” and the sages interpreted this as referring to Abraham through the added letter hei.
The hei added to Abraham signifies the creative force embedded in him.
The “hei” of “when they were created” indicates that the world was created through this hei.
The letter hei symbolizes divine expansion into creation.
So too Joseph received a hei—this is the final hei through which the world endures, given to Joseph, the righteous one, foundation of the world.
Joseph receives the sustaining, grounding force of divine creation.
“My sheaf rose and also stood upright.”
Joseph’s dream reflects his role as the one who upholds and stabilizes divine flow in the world.
And the matter is as follows.
The Sefat Emet now explains the spiritual structure behind this.
“The world is built on kindness.”
The foundation of creation is divine lovingkindness.
And this kindness to Abraham requires refinement, as it is written: “God saw the light that it was good and separated it”—He separated it for the righteous.
The primordial light of kindness must be purified so it can be received by the righteous.
This refinement of kindness is completed through Joseph.
Joseph perfects the channeling of divine generosity into the world.
And this is the meaning of “the morning became light.”
The rising of light symbolizes the revelation of clarified kindness.
“Light” (or) is the secret that was hidden for the righteous, the foundation of the world.
The primordial hidden light is reserved for the tzaddik, identified with Joseph.
And this is the aspect of “the house of Jacob who redeemed Abraham.”
Joseph draws divine kindness down into a form that redeems and completes the legacy of Abraham.
The kindness that reaches the level of the righteous becomes clarified and transformed into something enduring.
Through Joseph, divine love becomes stable and manifest in the world.
And about this it is said: “His kindness endures forever.”
The eternal endurance of kindness is realized through the tzaddik’s work.
And this is what God promised Abraham—“and be a blessing”—with which we conclude the blessing.
The blessing of Abraham culminates through the channel Joseph establishes.
And this hints at the aspect of Joseph, as explained there.
The concluding blessing subtly points to Joseph as the one who brings the Abrahamic blessing into full expression.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that while the tribes extend the patriarchs externally, Joseph embodies Jacob’s inner essence. Joseph receives the divine hei that sustains creation and refines the kindness rooted in Abraham. Through Joseph, hidden light becomes manifest, and divine kindness becomes enduring in the world.
