בפסוק וינס ויצא החוצה.

“In the verse: ‘He fled and went outside.’”

The Sefat Emet begins by focusing on Joseph’s escape from Potiphar’s wife as an act of transcending natural impulse.

וכתיב התם ויוצא אותו החוצה דרשו חז"ל למעלה מכיפת הרקיע.

“And it is written there: ‘And He took him outside,’ which the Sages interpret as above the dome of the heavens.”

The comparison is to Abraham being lifted beyond the natural order, showing that Joseph’s escape also reflects rising above nature.

כן יוסף יצא מכל דרך הטבעי.

“So too Joseph went out from all natural pathways.”

Joseph’s resistance was not merely moral but a supernatural empowerment.

ובאברהם אע"ה כ' ויוצא אותו שעדיין לא הי' נימול והקב"ה הבטיחו כה יהי' זרעך שיהי' להם כח בעצמם לצאת מן הטבע

“And regarding Abraham, it says: ‘He took him outside’ when he was still uncircumcised, and God promised: ‘So shall your seed be’—that they would have power in themselves to rise above nature.”

Abraham receives a promise that his descendants inherit the capacity to transcend natural limitations.

והאמין בה' ויחשבה לו צדקה כי לא הי' משיג איך יוכל בשר ודם מעצמו לצאת מן הטבע

“And he believed in God, and He accounted it to him as righteousness—for he could not grasp how flesh and blood could of itself rise above nature.”

Abraham’s faith is praised because he trusted in a promise that exceeded human comprehension.

אבל הקב"ה חתם לו ולזרעו אות ברית קודש אשר בכח הזה יכולין לצאת מן הטבע

“But the Holy One sealed for him and his seed the sign of the holy covenant, through which they are able to transcend nature.”

The covenant of circumcision implants a divine power enabling spiritual transcendence.

כמ"ש מי יעלה לנו השמימה. השמימה הוא למעלה מכיפת הרקיע.

“As it is written: ‘Who will ascend for us to the heavens?’—‘Heavens’ meaning above the dome of the sky.”

The verse alludes to supernatural ascent, paralleling Abraham and Joseph.

והנה לאברהם וליוסף ניתוסף להם ה'.

“And behold, to both Abraham and Joseph a letter Heh was added.”

The added letter symbolizes divine empowerment.

שמדת אברהם נגמר ע"י יוסף ושניהם ענין אחד.

“For Abraham’s attribute was completed through Joseph, and both are one matter.”

Joseph expresses and fulfills Abraham’s spiritual mission.

ובזכותו של אברהם אע"ה נברא העולם כמ"ש בהבראם באברהם והוא אות ה' שבה נברא העולם.

“Through Abraham the world was created, as it says ‘behibaram’—‘for the sake of Abraham’; this is the letter Heh through which the world was created.”

The Heh represents creative divine breath invested in Abraham.

וביוסף ה' שבה מתקיים העולם.

“And in Joseph the letter Heh through which the world endures.”

Joseph embodies the sustaining power of creation.

וכן אמרו חז"ל שנק' בני ישראל בני יוסף הואיל והוא מכלכלן פי' שקיום העולם ע"י יוסף.

“Thus the Sages said that the Israelites are called the children of Joseph, for he sustained them—meaning the world’s endurance is through Joseph.”

Joseph’s role as provider symbolizes cosmic support.

כמ"ש צדיק יסוד עולם.

“As it is written: ‘A righteous one is the foundation of the world.’”

Joseph, the archetypal tzaddik, anchors creation.

וכמו כן בכל איש ישראל שנקרא עולם קטן בפ"ע. בכח הברית מתקיים ויכול לדבוק בחיים.

“And so too in every Jew, called a small world unto himself; through the power of the covenant he endures and can cleave to life.”

The covenant grants each person spiritual vitality.

והנה יוסף היה הכנה לדורות כמ"ש יוסף ירד למצרים וגידר עצמו מן הערוה בזכותו כל אנשים נגדרו במצרים מן הערוה.

“And Joseph was a preparation for all generations; as it says: Joseph descended to Egypt and guarded himself from immorality—through his merit all people were guarded from immorality in Egypt.”

Joseph’s purity established a protective spiritual force for Israel.

ולאו דוקא מצרים רק בכל גלות מסייע כחו של יוסף הצדיק.

“And not only in Egypt, but in every exile the power of Joseph assists.”

Joseph’s spiritual influence extends throughout history.

וכתיב ויהי ה' את יוסף. את לרבות כל מי שיש בו הארה מיוסף הצדיק והם בני ישראל דכ' ועמך כולם צדיקים.

“And it is written: ‘And God was with Joseph.’ ‘With’ includes all who possess a spark of Joseph the righteous—namely Israel, as it says: ‘Your people are all righteous.’”

Any Jew who carries Joseph’s spiritual light receives divine companionship.

לכן ה' עמהם בגלות כדכתיב ויהי ה' את יוסף.

“Therefore God is with them in exile, as it is written regarding Joseph: ‘And God was with Joseph.’”

Joseph’s paradigm explains divine presence in exile.

ויהי בבית אדוניו המצרי.

“And he was in the house of his Egyptian master.”

Even in the lowest places, Joseph’s holiness drew divine accompaniment.

The Sefat Emet teaches that both Abraham and Joseph embody transcendence of nature through the divine covenant, with Joseph completing Abraham’s mission. This power extends to all Israel, granting endurance and purity even in exile.
