Milah refines desire to reveal the inner point

And behold, in the parsha of milah it is written: "Walk before Me and be tamim (whole)" (Bereishis 17:1), and it is written: "Remove the dross from the silver, and a vessel emerges for the smith." (Mishlei 25:4)
The Sefas Emes joins the command of bris milah — "walk before Me and be whole" — with the image of refining silver: only once the dross is removed does a finished vessel emerge.
For the orlah (foreskin) and the waste matter obstruct the refining of the vessel, preventing unity and wholeness in a person.
The orlah is the "dross" — it blocks a person from being refined into a whole, unified vessel for serving Hashem.
"Silver" (kesef) is the aspect of longing and desire, as it is written: "I deeply longed (nichsof nichsafti)." (Bereishis 31:30)
The word kesef (silver) shares a root with kisuf (yearning); it represents the faculty of desire and longing within a person.
And the entire form of the body is a likeness of the inner dimension (penimiyus).
Every limb and feature of the physical body mirrors a corresponding spiritual reality within.
Therefore, certainly the root of the organ of milah is the holy longing and desire that the tzaddikim possess, as it is written: "A tzaddik will flourish like a date palm" (Tehillim 92:13). Therefore in the body too the desire is strongest in this place, and Hashem gave us the mitzvah of milah to remove the orlah and to diminish the physical desire — and to the degree that the body is rectified, so the inner desire shines. And this is "remove the dross from the silver," so that the inner essence of longing becomes recognizable.
The spiritual root of the bris is the pure, holy yearning for Hashem that tzaddikim possess; correspondingly, the body's strongest physical desire is concentrated in this place. Milah removes the orlah and diminishes the coarse physical taavah, and as the body is refined, the inner holy longing is revealed — the "dross" is removed so that the pure penimiyus of desire can shine through.
And all the mitzvos depend on the mitzvah of milah, for "Zachor" and "Shamor" on Shabbos Kodesh are to remove the orlah so that the penimiyus is revealed.
Milah is the foundation upon which all mitzvos rest; even the twin commands of Shabbos — "Remember" and "Guard" — serve the same purpose, stripping away concealment so the inner light is revealed.
And this is the hint in [the halacha that] "if one circumcised but did not perform periah (the uncovering), it is as if he did not circumcise" — for periah is the revelation of the penimiyus, and this is the ultimate purpose of milah.
The two stages of the mitzvah teach the whole idea: merely cutting the orlah without periah is incomplete, because periah — the full uncovering — represents the revelation of the inner point, which is the true goal of the entire bris.
And certainly in Avraham Avinu this was fulfilled in completeness, as it says immediately after the milah, "And Hashem appeared to him" (Bereishis 18:1), as the Midrash says on "From my flesh I behold the Divine" (Iyov 19:26). But Hashem forged a bris with Avraham that all of Bnei Yisrael who are circumcised should have a portion in this covenant, as it is written: "to be a God to you and to your offspring after you" (Bereishis 17:7) — that through the milah Hashem's Divinity, may His Name be blessed, rests upon a person; and as it is written: "we will build upon it a turret of silver" (Shir HaShirim 8:9), to prepare the aspect of ahavah rabbah (great love) for all of Bnei Yisrael.
In Avraham this revelation was perfect — Hashem appeared to him right after the bris, fulfilling "from my flesh I behold the Divine." Yet the covenant was not Avraham's alone: every circumcised Jew shares in this bris, so that through milah Hashem's presence rests upon the person. The "turret of silver" built upon the refined kesef (longing) prepares a vessel of ahavah rabbah, great love for Hashem, in every member of Bnei Yisrael.
Summary: Bris milah is the refining of the human "vessel" — removing the orlah, the dross, so that the pure inner longing (kesef/penimiyus) for Hashem can shine. The body mirrors the soul, and the place of milah is where physical desire is strongest precisely because its root is the holy yearning of tzaddikim. Periah, the uncovering, is the true goal: the revelation of the inner point. All mitzvos, even Shabbos, depend on this stripping-away of concealment. Fulfilled perfectly in Avraham, who merited Hashem's revelation, the bris extends to every circumcised Jew, drawing Hashem's Divine presence upon him and preparing a vessel of ahavah rabbah for all Bnei Yisrael.
