Truth, Peace, and Strife

“In the Midrash: ‘There was no tranquility… and anger came…’”
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash, which teaches that moments of hoped‑for peace were immediately followed by turmoil.
“Also in Parashat Beshalach, regarding ‘And Amalek came,’ they interpreted it as ‘anger came.’”
The coming of Amalek is understood as the arrival of disruptive, hostile force — an embodiment of spiritual agitation.
“For this section is placed next to the chief of Amalek mentioned earlier.”
The juxtaposition in the Torah underscores the thematic link between Amalek and the disturbance described.
“As written elsewhere, Jacob and Joseph represent truth and peace.”
The Sefat Emet frames Jacob as the force of truth, and Joseph as the force of harmony and reconciliation.
“Opposite them stand Esau and Amalek.”
They are the spiritual opposites of Jacob and Joseph, embodying distortion and conflict.
“Vanity and falsehood — that is Esau.”
Esau symbolizes illusion and deceit, in contrast to Jacob’s truth.
“War and strife — that is Amalek.”
Amalek represents divisiveness and conflict, the opposite of Joseph’s peace.
“And it was he who caused the hatred among the tribes.”
Amalekic energy — conflict and suspicion — is understood as the root of the tension among Joseph’s brothers.
“And so now, in the exile of Edom, the Temple was destroyed mainly because of baseless hatred.”
The same forces of inner division persist in the current exile, manifesting as senseless enmity.
“In truth, the aspect of truth — Jacob — is the part between a person and God, rooted in the soul.”
Jacob’s ‘truth’ is the inward, spiritual relationship with God.
“And the aspect of peace — Joseph — is the part between one person and another, concerning the repair of the body, for souls are inherently close.”
Peace among people belongs to the realm of embodied life, since ultimately all souls share a deep unity.
“Thus, when it says that Jacob sought to dwell in tranquility in this world — this refers to the bodily realm.”
Jacob’s desire for worldly peace corresponds to Joseph’s domain of harmony in material life.
“Joseph’s turmoil leapt upon him.”
Because peace in the physical realm is always vulnerable, Joseph’s troubles arose precisely when Jacob sought rest.
Summary: Jacob and Joseph represent truth and peace, opposed by Esau and Amalek, who embody falsehood and conflict. These forces shape both historical events and inner spiritual dynamics.
