“These are the generations of Jacob: Joseph.”

This hints that through guarding the holy covenant one merits the aspect of Jacob, which is the Torah.

This is a hint that through guarding the holy covenant one merits the Torah, the aspect of Jacob.

The Sefat Emet teaches that Jacob represents the embodiment of Torah, and access to this level comes through sanctity in the covenant.

The Torah: “Truth to Jacob”—there is no truth except the Torah.

Jacob is associated with truth, and true truth is defined as Torah itself.

And to merit that the words of Torah be fruitful and multiply within him is through the covenant.

The inner expansion of Torah understanding depends on purity and holiness connected to the covenant.

As the Midrash says: “He tells His words to Jacob”—one who is not circumcised does not merit Torah.

The Midrash underscores that entry into Torah revelation is tied to the sign of the covenant.

Just as the offspring of the body come through the foundation, so too the illumination of the soul—so it may shine within a person and produce spiritual offspring—is through the sign of the holy covenant.

Physical generativity and spiritual generativity mirror one another; both flow from purity in the covenantal foundation.

The Sefat Emet teaches that the Torah associated with Jacob, the quality of truth, becomes accessible and fruitful within a person through holiness of the covenant, which enables both physical and spiritual generativity.
