Hearing Old and New

“In the verse: ‘Gather and listen, children of Jacob, and listen to Israel.’”
The Sefat Emet notes the repetition of the command to listen, addressed once to “children of Jacob” and once to “Israel.”
“There are two listenings, as Scripture often says ‘you shall surely listen,’ and the Sages taught: if you listen to the old, you will hear the new.”
The two listenings reflect a process: receptivity to what one already knows enables the unfolding of new understanding.
“For it is written: ‘He established a testimony in Jacob.’”
The word ‘testimony’ implies a place of mixture or tension, where clarification is needed.
“Testimony is where there is mixture.”
Testimony operates where good and bad are interwoven and must be distinguished.
“And this is the aspect of rectifying the understanding of good and evil.”
Jacob’s role involves cultivating discernment that separates truth from confusion.
“But Torah, named in Israel, is the Tree of Life.”
The name ‘Israel’ signifies a higher clarity connected to Torah as pure life-force.
“And these are the two names: Jacob and Israel.”
Jacob represents struggle and mixture; Israel represents clarity and transcendence.
“And regarding this we say: ‘He preserved our soul in life.’”
Divine sustenance preserves the soul through both lower and higher states.
“‘And did not allow our feet to slip’ refers to the lower level, for which he is called Jacob.”
Jacob signifies stability amid imperfection—maintaining footing in a mixed world.
“And Jacob our father, peace be upon him, bequeathed both names to his descendants.”
Every Jew inherits both aspects: the struggle and the clarity.
“‘Listen, sons of Jacob’ refers to the planting already within them, which must be brought from potential to actual.”
The first listening activates what is already embedded in the soul.
“And this was rectified in the exile of Egypt, to clarify the understanding.”
A trial of purification prepared the capacity for true discernment.
“This is the aspect of listening to the old, to repair what is planted within each person, as it says: ‘Eternal life You have planted within us,’ referring to the Oral Torah.”
One must cultivate the inner Torah already sown within the heart.
“Afterward, ‘listen to Israel’ is the new listening acquired at the giving of the Torah, and so it is for every Jew.”
After refining what is internal, one becomes able to receive new illumination from above.
Summary: The Sefat Emet explains two levels of listening—first awakening what is already planted within (Jacob), then receiving new understanding from above (Israel). These parallel the mixed realm requiring discernment and the pure Torah realm of clarity, both inherited by every Jew.
