Spiritual Steadfastness in Exile

בפסוק ויהי בבית אדוניו המצרי.
In the verse: “And he was in the house of his Egyptian master.”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting the Torah’s emphasis on Joseph’s state of being in each location he entered.
ויהי שם בבית הסהר.
“And he was there in the prison.”
Again Scripture stresses that Joseph’s essential state remained constant even in confinement.
ויהי' בהויתו יהי'.
“And his ‘being’ remained ‘being.’”
This teaches that Joseph’s inner essence stayed unchanged wherever he was.
הוא בחי' השתוות שלא קיבל שינוי מכל אלה המקומות.
This is the quality of equanimity, that he did not undergo change from any of these places.
Joseph maintained spiritual constancy despite radically different circumstances.
וכ"כ ויוסף הי' במצרים.
And so it is written: “And Joseph was in Egypt.”
Even in Egypt, symbolic of spiritual descent, Joseph remained himself.
הוא יוסף הרועה הוא המלך ולא נשתנה.
He is Joseph the shepherd; he is the king — and he did not change.
His identity as a tzaddik endured from humble origins to royal power.
וזהו בחי' צדיק יסוד עולם.
And this is the aspect of “the righteous one is the foundation of the world.”
The tzaddik anchors the world through unshakable inner stability.
ולכן הי' הוא המכין לגאולה.
Therefore he was the one who prepared the way for redemption.
His steadfastness enabled the future liberation of Israel.
שזה עיקר נסיון הגלות שלא יקבל שינוי עי"ז.
For this is the main test of exile — that one not be changed by it.
Remaining faithful during spiritual displacement is the core challenge.
וכן צריך להיות איש ישראל לידע ולהאמין כי הכל בהשגחת הבורא ולא במקרה.
So must every Jew know and believe that all is under Divine providence and not accidental.
Awareness of God’s guidance preserves inner stability.
וגם כשירד למצרים ולבית הסהר ידע שזהו שליחות הבורא ית'.
And even when he descended to Egypt and to the prison, he knew this was the mission of the Creator.
Joseph interpreted hardship as divinely directed purpose.
ובכ"מ שרצונו ית' לשלוח האדם צריך לעשות שליחותו ולעשות רצון המלך.
And wherever God desires to send a person, he must fulfill his mission and carry out the will of the King.
One’s task is to serve faithfully wherever Providence places him.
ולפי שהי' גלוי לפניו ית"ש שלא יקבל שינוי נשתלח הוא ראשון למצרים להיות הכנה לכל בני ישראל.
And since it was revealed before Him that Joseph would not undergo change, he was sent first to Egypt to prepare for all Israel.
His constancy made him the forerunner who paved the way for the nation’s survival.
וכן דרשו חז"ל בזכות יוסף נגדרו כל בנ"י בעריות במצרים.
And so taught the Sages: in the merit of Joseph, all Israel remained guarded from immorality in Egypt.
His personal purity protected the nation collectively.
וגם מה שדרשו בזכות שרה נגדרו כל הנשים גם בה כ' ויהיו חיי שרה כולן שוין שלא קיבלה שינוי כשנלקחה לפרעה.
And similarly they taught that in the merit of Sarah all the women were protected, for regarding her it is written: “And the life of Sarah was… all equally good,” meaning she did not undergo change when taken to Pharaoh.
Sarah, like Joseph, exemplified unwavering inner purity despite external trials.
וכן יוסף כמ"ש:
And so with Joseph, as it is written:
The teaching concludes by linking Joseph back to this same theme of unchanging righteousness.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Joseph’s greatness lay in his unaltered spiritual essence across all circumstances. This constancy is the foundation of the tzaddik and the key to enduring exile, fulfilling divine mission, and preparing redemption.
