Divine Providence in Joseph’s Trials

מה שלא גילה הקב"ה ליעקב אע"ה ממכירת יוסף.
“That which the Holy One, blessed be He, did not reveal to Jacob regarding the sale of Joseph.”
The Sefat Emet opens by noting that God concealed the truth of Joseph’s sale from Jacob.
אף כי הי' ע"י החרם כו'.
“Even though it was through the ban, etc.”
Even though the brothers’ oath prevented the revelation, the concealment still raises a question.
מ"מ למה סיבבו כן משמים.
“Nevertheless, why was this arranged from Heaven?”
He asks why divine providence enabled such concealment.
אפשר כי הי' לטובתו.
“It is possible that it was for his benefit.”
The concealment itself may have protected Jacob.
כי הי' לו צער יותר אם הי' יודע כי נמכר למצרים מקום ערוה וטומאה.
“For he would have had greater anguish had he known that Joseph was sold to Egypt, a place of immorality and impurity.”
Knowing Joseph’s exact location would have caused unbearable spiritual pain.
כי באמת הי' דבר גדול מאוד שנשאר יוסף הצדיק בקדושתו במצרים.
“For it was truly a great thing that Joseph the righteous remained in his holiness in Egypt.”
Joseph’s ability to stay holy in Egypt was a profound miracle.
ונראה כי הקב"ה עשה הכל לטובה.
“And it appears that God did everything for the good.”
The events were orchestrated with beneficent purpose.
כי לא הי' באפשרי שיגאלו בני ישראל בלתי הקדמת ירידת יוסף למצרים.
“For it would not have been possible for Israel to be redeemed without Joseph’s descent to Egypt first.”
Joseph’s descent was a necessary precondition for future redemption.
וגם נסיון של יוסף במצרים לא הי' באפשרי.
“And also Joseph’s trial in Egypt would not have been possible otherwise.”
His spiritual test depended on this chain of events.
רק עי"ז עצמו שנמכר בעולה ובעוות הדין.
“Except through the very fact that he was sold unjustly and through perversion of justice.”
The injustice itself became part of his spiritual protection.
זה הי' לו סיוע שלא יטמע ח"ו ביניהם.
“This served as an aid so that he would not, God forbid, assimilate among them.”
The suffering strengthened his resistance to assimilation.
וזכות זה סייעהו להשאר בקדושה.
“And this merit helped him remain in holiness.”
His unjust suffering generated spiritual merit.
גם הנסיון עם אשת פוטיפר שכתב במדרש ואין איש כו'.
“Also the trial with Potiphar’s wife, of which the Midrash says ‘and no man…’ etc.”
The Midrash emphasizes the enormity of that temptation.
נראה שהי' נסיון גדול מאוד.
“It appears that it was a very great trial.”
A uniquely intense spiritual challenge.
ויש ב' מיני נסיונות...
“There are two kinds of trials…”
The Sefat Emet distinguishes between struggles one can overcome through strength and those beyond human ability.
זה הי' הכנה לכל הגליות.
“This was a preparation for all exiles.”
Joseph’s experience became the template for the nation’s future trials.
כי גלות מצרים הוא כלל כל הגליות.
“For the exile of Egypt contains within it all exiles.”
Egypt is archetype of all future exiles.
ועיקר הגלות הוא תוס' הבחירה.
“And the essence of exile is the increase of free choice.”
Exile amplifies moral confusion and spiritual choice.
ולכן כשזוכין לצאת מהבחירה הוא גאולה שלימה.
“Therefore, when one merits to rise beyond choice, it is complete redemption.”
Redemption comes when divine clarity lifts a person beyond inner conflict.
Summary: Joseph’s sale, concealment, trials, and ultimate steadfastness were divinely arranged both for his protection and as preparation for Israel’s future exiles. His ascent beyond ordinary human choice models the path to redemption.
