Spiritual Sensitivity and Truth
Yosef · Holiness · Brothers · Speech · Righteousness
“And Joseph brought… their evil report…”
The Sefat Emet begins by addressing Joseph’s report about his brothers.
Surely Joseph the Righteous was not among those who speak lashon hara.
Joseph’s intention was not slander; his righteousness precluded such behavior.
But a true tzaddik cannot tolerate even a trace of wrongdoing.
His sensitivity to spiritual imperfection compelled him to speak.
As with what is said of Elijah: “I have been exceedingly zealous…”
Joseph’s zeal reflected a similar holy intolerance for impurity.
Therefore the tribes understood that this was truly the case: that they could not endure spiritually if Joseph remained with their father, and they would be pushed aside, God forbid.
They sensed that Joseph’s intense sanctity created a dynamic in which their own paths could not flourish beside him.
For Joseph the Righteous was separated from all of this world.
His holiness placed him on a different spiritual plane than ordinary people.
As it is written: “Nazir among his brothers.”
This verse describes Joseph’s distinct, consecrated nature.
And he is also called “a son of old age.”
This title signifies a unique spiritual quality, not merely physical age.
Meaning that he was born in holiness and knew nothing of even a hint of evil in the world.
Joseph’s innocence was essential to his spiritual stature.
Therefore he could not tolerate the actions of his brothers.
Even minor imperfections were unbearable to him.
Even though they too were righteous.
Their righteousness was real, but of a different nature and level.
And it was necessary that he be in Egypt.
Joseph’s separation created a situation in which exile became part of the divine plan.
And afterward he knew and understood that his brothers were also righteous.
Through the later unfolding of events, Joseph recognized their true greatness.
Summary: Joseph’s report was not slander but the result of his extreme purity, which made him unable to bear even slight wrongdoing. His separation from worldly experience placed him on a different spiritual plane, creating tension with his brothers. Ultimately, through the process of exile and reconciliation, he came to recognize their righteousness as well.
