Spiritual Garments and Temptation

“In the verse ‘She caught him by his garment…,’ and our Sages said: ‘He came home…,’ except that the image of his father appeared to him.”

The Sefat Emet opens by noting that Joseph’s resistance to temptation came through a heavenly vision of Jacob, as taught by the Sages.

“Far be it, far be it, that such a righteous one ever considered sinning.”

The Rebbe emphasizes that Joseph never entertained sin; the trial was on another spiritual plane.

“Rather, the matter is as known: the human soul possesses several garments.”

The Sefat Emet introduces the mystical concept of spiritual ‘garments’ of the soul.

“And there is a garment that gives the evil inclination a point of attachment, as written in Shaar HaKedusha.”

Some layers of the self are susceptible to influence from the evil inclination.

“And regarding Joseph it is written: ‘He made him a coat of many colors’; surely this was a very precious garment.”

This garment symbolizes Joseph’s elevated spiritual clothing.

“It is taught that the evil inclination had no power over three: the Patriarchs. They were the chariot and had no bodily garment at all.”

The Patriarchs lived fully in a higher spiritual state, unbound by physical ‘garments.’

“Only in the manner in which beings will exist in the World to Come.”

Their earthly lives resembled the future, perfected state.

“And this garment Jacob gave to Joseph as well, for it is written, ‘A son of old age,’ which the Sages interpret as meaning his appearance resembled his father.”

Joseph inherited his father’s spiritual likeness, including his elevated garment.

“And this is the visage engraved beneath the Throne of Glory.”

Their spiritual form is rooted in the supernal realms.

“But when he was sold to Egypt, it is written earlier: ‘They stripped Joseph…’”

This act symbolizes the removal of his special spiritual garment.

“For surely every trial occurs when one’s unique spiritual level is taken from him.”

A test arises when a person is stripped of their natural spiritual strengths.

“And likewise, in every exile, Israel loses the image and garment that was ours in the Holy Land.”

Exile entails a dimming of our collective spiritual identity.

“Thus it says ‘by his garment,’ referring to the outer bodily garment.”

Potiphar’s wife grasps only the external layer, not Joseph’s true essence.

“But in that moment the image of his father appeared to him, and it is written: ‘He left his garment and fled,’ meaning he departed from that garment and clothed himself in his true, unique garment.”

Joseph transcended the compromised outer layer and reconnected with his higher spiritual identity.

“And this is the meaning of ‘and no man was there’: he left the bodily garment and became entirely spiritual.”

Joseph rose above physicality in the moment of trial.

“And this hints that for anyone who truly serves God, in a time of trouble he is helped by the higher powers of his soul, as in ‘May He send your help from holiness.’”

Every sincere person receives aid from their higher soul in moments of spiritual danger.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Joseph’s trial involved the stripping and restoration of spiritual garments. Temptation touches only the outer layers, while the inner, supernal identity—linked to the Patriarchs—remains pure. In exile and in crisis, one can access higher soul-levels that provide divine assistance.
