Sanctifying Body and Soul

Bo · תרמ"ז (1886) · Essay 3

“In the section ‘Sanctify to Me,’ etc., ‘and it shall be… as a sign on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, so that the Torah of the Lord shall be in your mouth.’”

The Sefat Emet begins by citing the verse about tefillin, emphasizing that their purpose is to ensure that the Torah remains present and alive within a person.

“For the exile was in the aspects of speech, action, and thought, as stated in the portion of Shemot; so after the redemption they were given holy powers in these three.”

Exile affected the three human faculties—speech, action, and thought. Redemption restores and elevates these faculties, granting them renewed sanctity.

“‘On your hand’ refers to action.”

Tefillin shel yad corresponds to sanctifying and directing one’s physical deeds.

“‘Between your eyes’ refers to thought.”

Tefillin shel rosh symbolizes the elevation of the mind and inner awareness.

“‘The Torah of the Lord in your mouth’ refers to speech.”

Speech, too, becomes sanctified and aligned with Torah through the mitzvah.

“And these mitzvot help each day to subjugate action and thought to Him, and through this one merits Torah.”

The daily wearing of tefillin trains one to harmonize mind and deed with the Divine, creating the inner vessel that allows Torah to be received.

“And this itself is included in ‘Sanctify to Me every firstborn,’ in man and in beast.”

The Sefat Emet links the sanctification of the firstborn to the sanctification of human faculties, body and soul alike.

“As in the verse, ‘Man and beast You save, O Lord.’”

Both the higher (human) and lower (animal) aspects of a person require Divine refinement and protection.

“And Israel binds the first power of the body, which is the animal soul, through the tefillin of the hand.”

The hand‑tefillin connects and sanctifies the instinctual, bodily side of the person.

“And the first power of the soul, the human aspect, through the tefillin of the head.”

The head‑tefillin elevates the higher spiritual capacities associated with intellect and consciousness.

“As we request, through the mitzvah of tefillin, that there be drawn forth… a flow of holiness…”

The ultimate purpose of tefillin is to draw Divine holiness into all levels of the self—body, mind, and speech.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that exile damaged the three faculties of speech, action, and thought. Through tefillin, each faculty is repaired and sanctified—hand for deed, head for thought, and Torah in the mouth for speech. This sanctification aligns all dimensions of the person with the Divine and prepares one to truly receive Torah.
