Torah’s Unique Divine Wisdom

Chanukah · תרנ"ד (1893) · Essay 1

It is stated in the book Ner Mitzvah by the Maharal that the Greeks were wicked in wisdom; therefore they sought to translate the Torah into Greek, etc., see there.

The Sefat Emet cites the Maharal’s idea that the Greek opposition came specifically through their intellectual pride, which led them to reduce Torah into their philosophical categories by forcing a Greek translation.

And this is what we say: “to make them forget Your Torah” — through mixing their wisdom into it, for they imagined that the Torah is like any other worldly wisdom.

The forgetting was not through destruction but through assimilation: they wished to embed Greek thought into Torah, treating it as ordinary human knowledge.

But in truth, the wisdom of the Torah is elevated and hidden beyond human comprehension.

The essence of Torah cannot be reduced to human categories; it transcends intellectual systems.

And it is written: “Behold, the fear of God — that is wisdom.” Our sages said that “behold” (hen) is a term of singularity, for when a person attains wisdom through awe, it endures forever and no other wisdom can mix with it.

True Torah wisdom arises from reverence, and such wisdom remains pure and unadulterated; foreign systems cannot infiltrate it.

Therefore the miracle of the Menorah was specifically with oil, which hints to the exalted quality of Israel that rises above all liquids and cannot mix with others, as the Midrash says on the verse “And God will make you supreme,” etc.

The uncontaminated oil symbolizes Israel’s inner spiritual quality: like pure oil, they float above and remain distinct.

Therefore the sages decreed against Greek wisdom, so that other forms of wisdom not be mixed into the wisdom of the Torah.

The decree was protective, safeguarding the purity of Torah from philosophical admixture.

Summary: The Greeks sought to subsume Torah into their intellectual worldview, but Torah’s true wisdom is transcendent and rooted in awe. The Menorah’s pure oil symbolizes Israel’s spiritual distinctness, leading the sages to prohibit Greek wisdom to preserve Torah’s integrity.
