From prayer to Torah's light
"On the eighth day there shall be an atzeres for you."
The Sefas Emes opens with the pasuk designating Shemini Atzeres, the gathering-day that follows the seven days of Sukkos.
We enter from the sukkah into the house, and "they go from strength to strength" is fulfilled — which Chazal expounded as those who go out from the beis haknesses to the beis hamidrash.
Leaving the temporary sukkah for the permanent home parallels Chazal's image of ascending "from strength to strength" — moving from the shul of prayer to the study hall of Torah.
For the sukkah is the aspect of tefillah, of the beis haknesses.
The sukkah corresponds to prayer — an avodah open and accessible to all.
Therefore in this even the seventy nations have a share, as it says, "My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the peoples."
Because the sukkah corresponds to prayer, and prayer belongs to all of mankind, the nations too have a portion in it — for the Bais Hamikdash was to be a house of tefillah for every people.
And so they bring the seventy bulls on their behalf as well.
This is why the seventy parim of Sukkos are offered for the seventy nations — the universal dimension of prayer includes them.
But Atzeres is the aspect of Torah and the beis hamidrash, and this is reserved for Bnei Yisrael alone.
Shemini Atzeres represents Torah, the study hall — an intimacy belonging exclusively to Yisrael, with no portion for the nations.
And it is similar to Shavuos, which is called "Atzeres" in the words of Chazal.
Just as Shavuos — the festival of Matan Torah — is termed "Atzeres" by Chazal, so this day of Torah carries the same name.
And the Kedushas Levi writes the reason: that every Yom Tov has a distinctive mitzvah — matzah, sukkah — but on Shavuos there is only the cessation from labor, and therefore it is called "Atzeres" — see there.
The Berditchever explains that Pesach has matzah and Sukkos has the sukkah, but Shavuos has no unique physical mitzvah, only resting from melachah; hence the name "Atzeres," from "atzirah," holding back from work.
The matter is that it is written "a mitzvah is a candle" — and on the festivals of Matzah and Sukkos, through the mitzvos that are called a "candle," one merits to reach the light.
A mitzvah is a ner, a vessel that bears flame; on Pesach and Sukkos the tangible mitzvos serve as candles through which one ascends to the divine light.
But on Shavuos and Shemini Atzeres the very light of the Torah itself is revealed.
On these two "Atzeres" days there is no intermediary mitzvah-candle; the essential ohr of Torah shines forth directly.
And Shavuos is the aspect of Yaakov, and Shemini Atzeres is the aspect of Moshe Rabbeinu.
The Sefas Emes assigns Shavuos to the middah of Yaakov and Shemini Atzeres to the middah of Moshe Rabbeinu.
And both are one matter, as is known, that Moshe is "from within" and Yaakov is "from without."
By the well-known Kabbalistic teaching, Moshe represents the inner penimiyus and Yaakov the outer dimension; the two are really one truth seen from inside and outside.
Therefore concerning Yaakov it is written, "You shall give truth to Yaakov" — even though falsehood still rules in the world.
Yaakov, working from "without," draws truth into a world where sheker still holds sway; his emes is a foothold of truth amid concealment.
And Moshe Rabbeinu brought down the Torah of truth to the world.
Moshe, working from "within," brought down the complete Toras emes itself — truth in its essence.
Therefore on Atzeres [Shavuos] we are judged concerning the fruits of the tree.
Shavuos, the Yaakov-aspect of revealed fruit, is when the world is judged for the produce of the trees.
And on Shemini Atzeres He sends down the rain, which gives life to the root of the tree to bring forth the fruits.
Shemini Atzeres, the Moshe-aspect, is when judgment is made for rain — the hidden, inner force that nourishes the very root so that the fruits can later grow; the inner source precedes and sustains the outer fruit.
Summary: Moving from the sukkah into the house mirrors the ascent from prayer (open to all nations, hence the seventy bulls) to Torah and the beis hamidrash (Yisrael's alone). Shemini Atzeres, like Shavuos, is an "Atzeres" where the essential light of Torah shines without an intermediary mitzvah-candle. Shavuos is Yaakov "from without" (judged for fruits), and Shemini Atzeres is Moshe "from within" (judged for the rain that feeds the root) — two faces of one truth.
