In the Midrash: "Is there a purchase (mekach) in which there are fields, vineyards, silver and gold…?"

The Midrash, on the verse "for I have given you a good purchase (lekach tov)," marvels that the Torah is a single "purchase" that somehow contains within it fields, vineyards, silver and gold — all of creation.

The explanation: just as all the works of Creation were brought into being through the Torah,

Chazal teach that Hashem looked into the Torah and created the world; the Torah is the blueprint of all that exists.

therefore one can find words of Torah in every place and in every action.

Since the Torah is the inner source of everything, its light can be discovered within any place and any deed in the world.

Therefore: "do not forsake My Torah" (Mishlei 4:2).

Because the Torah is embedded in all things, a person should never abandon it but seek it out everywhere.

Meaning: in all of one's actions a person should have a portion of Torah through them.

Every activity, even a mundane one, can become a means of grasping a "portion" in Torah, if a person looks for it.

As it is said: "make Me one chamber (kiton)."

Just as one is asked to set aside a single chamber for the Divine, so within every act one should reserve a place dedicated to Hashem.

In all things let there be a portion and a "first" (reishis) for Hashem.

Like the terumah and the reishis (first-fruits) given to Hashem, in everything we do we should consecrate a first and choicest part to Him.

And although, for us who are sunk in physicality, this is called a "portion" and a terumah lifted up to the One on High —

From our limited vantage point, immersed as we are in the material, we regard this dedicated portion as a small offering raised up to Hashem out of the larger physical whole.

but in truth the matter is the reverse.

The Sefas Emes overturns our intuition: it is not the physical that is primary and the holy portion secondary, but exactly the opposite.

For this portion — the nitzotz kadosh (holy spark) within all actions —

That dedicated portion is really the holy spark that lies hidden within every deed.

is the essence (ikar) and the very life-force that animates all the actions.

The holy spark is not a fraction taken from the act — it is the act's true core and the source of its vitality. The physical is merely its outer shell.

This is the meaning of: "the early chasidim made their Torah fixed (kevua) and their work incidental (arai)."

The chasidim of old understood this truth, so they treated Torah as the permanent essence of their lives and their labor as something secondary.

Meaning: in all things, the Torah was the essence for them.

Even within their worldly work, the inner Torah point was what they considered primary and real.

And the labor and the action were secondary (tafel) — as it truly is.

They saw reality as it really is: the holy spark is ikar and the physical activity is tafel, a mere outer wrapping.

And as for us, the simple ones, we must at least take care to give a terumah and a portion to Hashem in all our actions, as above.

We may not be on the level of those early chasidim, but at the very least we should make sure to dedicate a portion of every action to Hashem, drawing out its holy spark.

Summary: Since the entire world was created through the Torah, words of Torah can be found within every place and every action. We are therefore bidden to dedicate a "portion" and a "first" to Hashem in all that we do. Though we feel this consecrated portion to be a small offering lifted out of the physical, in truth it is the reverse: the holy spark within each act is its very essence and life-force, while the physical deed is only its outer shell — a truth the early chasidim lived by, and one to which even we should aspire.
