The wicked Greek empire intended entirely to nullify the Jewish people’s connection to Torah and the service of God.
The Sefat Emet begins by framing the Greek decree as a spiritual attack aimed at severing Israel from their divine mission.
Therefore the victory came through the priests, those who serve God.
Because the Greeks sought to extinguish divine service, the salvation came specifically through those most devoted to it — the kohanim.
Likewise, that generation’s entire suffering was due solely to the disruption of Torah and divine service for the sake of Heaven, and therefore You fought their fight, for their struggle was like the struggle above, with pure intentions for the sake of Heaven.
Their pain was spiritual, not material; because their motives aligned with Heaven’s will, the divine fought on their behalf.
And this miracle expresses an extra measure of affection for Israel, showing that God desires their service.
The miracle of Chanuka is interpreted as a sign of divine love, affirming the value of Israel’s worship.
Therefore Hallel was instituted: “Praise, servants of God,” for it is testimony that you are chosen to be servants of God.
Reciting Hallel becomes an act that confirms Israel’s identity as God’s dedicated servants.
Thus, in these days a person must commit himself to the service of God with joy.
Chanuka is a time to renew one’s devotion to divine service, joyfully and wholeheartedly.
This is the meaning of the mezuzah on the right and the Chanuka lights on the left: the mezuzah represents the Written Torah, and in Heaven it is already clear that God’s portion is His people.
The mezuzah symbolizes the eternal clarity in the upper realms that Israel belongs to God.
But in this world, the world of falsehood, testimony is needed for this, and when God performed miracles for us, it became clarified even in this world that we are His people.
Because this world obscures truth, miracles serve as visible proof of Israel’s divine connection.
The right side, as it is written “length of days is in her right hand,” corresponds to the World to Come, the realm of unending existence.
The right symbolizes eternity, the spiritual domain beyond time.
And this world, on the left side, is the testimony of the Chanuka light, as explained above.
The Chanuka lamp placed on the left serves as testimony that even within this world of concealment, Israel’s bond with God shines forth.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the Greek attack targeted Torah and divine service, and therefore salvation came through those devoted to God. The miracles of Chanuka reveal divine love and affirm Israel's identity as God’s servants. Mezuzah and Chanuka lights symbolize eternal clarity above and needed testimony below, showing that God’s connection to Israel endures in all realms.
