Beyond the Power of the Stars

“We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt.”
The Sefat Emet opens by explaining the deeper reason behind Israel’s servitude in Egypt.
The reason for this matter is that the creation of the Children of Israel is above nature and the constellations.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel’s essence is rooted beyond the natural order and astrological forces.
For our forefather Abraham saw in his constellation that he would not bear children.
Abraham perceived through astrology that he was destined to remain childless.
And the Holy One replied to him: “There is no constellation for Israel,” as stated in the Talmud.
God told Abraham that Israel transcends astrological determinism.
But this raises a difficulty: who mentioned Israel at that moment?
The Sefat Emet points out that at this stage Abraham was alone—there was no “Israel” yet.
Rather, God answered him that since Israel was destined to come forth from him, and Israel has no constellation, all births of the Children of Israel were above the stars.
Abraham’s transcending of astrology was due to his future role as the father of Israel.
Thus it says: “I will multiply his seed and give him Isaac”; but Isaac was only one—rather “multiply” means exalt or elevate.
The “multiplying” refers not to number but to spiritual elevation.
For Isaac came from beyond the constellations and was born not through natural means.
Isaac’s miraculous birth demonstrates Israel’s supra-natural root.
Therefore the Children of Israel have no true existence in this world and within the constellations, and thus they were strangers and slaves.
Because Israel does not align with the structure of nature, their early condition was one of homelessness and servitude.
Thus the state of being a stranger began with Isaac’s birth: “Your seed shall be a stranger.”
The exile identity originates already with Isaac.
Therefore we were slaves to Pharaoh, who symbolizes Aries, the first of the constellations.
Pharaoh represents the dominant astrological force of nature itself.
And since Israel has no constellation, while this world depends on the constellations…
The natural world is shaped by the stars, but Israel stands above them.
The Children of Israel were enslaved to Pharaoh under Aries, and God took us out miraculously and gave us the Land of Israel miraculously, for naturally we have no place in this world.
Redemption and the gift of the land occur through supernatural intervention, not natural entitlement.
Thus He commanded us to slaughter a lamb on Passover to show that Israel has no constellation and stands above astrological governance.
The Passover lamb is a symbolic rejection of Aries and of determinism.
Therefore Israel sanctifies the times, because they stand above time, which depends on the constellations.
Israel’s calendar authority reflects their transcendence of cosmic cycles.
Thus they impart holiness and blessing to the times and to the world.
Holiness flows from Israel downward into creation.
For the world was created for Israel, who are called “the first.”
Israel is the spiritual root for which creation exists.
Therefore they stand above creation and the entire world.
The Sefat Emet concludes that Israel’s essence transcends all created realms.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel’s origins lie beyond nature and astrology, from the miraculous birth of Isaac to the Exodus. Passover expresses Israel’s transcendence of cosmic forces, enabling them to sanctify time and infuse creation with holiness.
