Divine Justice Against Enemies
Justice · Divine Protection · Israel · Retribution
רבת את ריבם דנת את דינם נקמת את נקמתם.
You fought their fight, You judged their judgment, You took their vengeance.
The Sefat Emet explains that all forms of deliverance granted to Israel ultimately come from God alone, who stands in for them and acts on their behalf in every aspect of justice and vindication.
This is as it is said: He is the witness, He is the judge, He is the litigant; and it is taught: Who are the enemies of the Holy One? Those who rise against the Children of Israel. And because all their hatred of Israel was truly hatred of His Name, therefore the Holy One became the litigant.
The Sefat Emet teaches that hostility toward Israel is, at root, hostility toward God Himself. Since the hatred is directed at the Divine presence manifest within Israel, God takes up their case personally—serving simultaneously as witness, judge, and party to the dispute. Thus, redemption occurs because the conflict is no longer merely between nations but a direct affront to the Divine.
Summary: The Sefat Emet emphasizes that God Himself enters the legal and spiritual struggle on behalf of Israel, because attacks on Israel are fundamentally attacks on God’s presence in the world.
